I read somewhere that they can't even write it in another language and use a translator to change to one of the approved languages, now that I thought was complete BS. I can think of a couple reasons for that but really it all comes down to the quality of the translator and the quality of the coding on the original language, baring that why should they care?

Oh and on the opra thing, that was fast:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/opera-mini-now-the-number-one-free-download-in-all-22-app-stores/

But then again if the concern is quality or performance then surely they need to set a bar for that. I'm sure there are plenty of examples* of iPhone applications which perform perfectly well and have perfectly adequate interfaces which fall foul of these new rules. Likewise I'm sure there are terrible, ugly slugs written in straight up objective c. If you want to keep out crappy, slow and ugly applications make rules against them, not against things that you think might be the cause of them. The app store approval process means Apple have to run through every app anyway, and checking for what they claim to be trying to stop would probably be easier than trying to check for what they've banned...

In reality if developers are just submitting binary applications then Apple shouldn't even be able to tell what they were originally written in so the whole thing is doubly pointless unless the goal is to target commercial applications like flash...

* No first hand knowledge but I've heard there are some good 3d game development tools which have been effectively banned by the new rules.

The one comment that strikes me at multi-tasking and what phones will get the updated OS? Is the iPhoneOS that resource heavy (or poorly structured) and selection of a barely capable CPU the reason for that, as I've seen 1MHz 6502 CPUs and 4.77MHz 8086 CPUs multi-task quite happily.

I imagine selecting barely adequate CPUs keeps costs down and helps preserve battery life. Though I really don't know much about that class of CPUs.

I saw that and immediately felt bad for some guy/gal, not only did they lose their phone and apparently aren't getting it back but knowing apple they just got fired and maybe worse for leaking information.

They were also dumb enough to bring a secret prototype phone to a bar.

It was disguised for a reason, actually I think it is very smart to do some decent product testing. That part I like to see.

I think the Slashdot commenters nailed it; a phone lost in a bar, magically found by a tech review site? This was a leak, either by Apple or by some insider.

I will keep an eye on that for when they get them working on 3rd gen ipods. Till then I am just noting what a massive world of difference (positive) it is in changing from a device using win mobile 6 to ipod os 3.

If U want p0rn Merc, just get an Andriod phone, like Steve sez :)

Jobs: if you want porn, "buy an Android phone"

he views Android as a haven for porn due to its lighter app restrictions and that Apple has a duty to protect children from the content altogether, even if the iPhone has parental controls that would already allow filtering by app ratings."We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone," Jobs said. "Folks who want porn can buy and [sic] Android phone."

Funny how Android and Wblows Mob7 also have their own kinds of control/restrictions...it's almost like they're copying Apple :)

http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/04/21/flash.support.said.to.be.in.the.works/

iPhone hacker and Devteam member planetbeing appears to have successfully configured Android to run on an iPhone. The hack utilizes OpeniBoot, a Linux 2.6 bootloader that works with first- and second-generation iPhones. The system provides dual-boot functionality, allowing users to run either the iPhone OS or Android.
Planetbeing admits that the Android OS does not yet run at "production quality" on the iPhone, but "pretty much everything" works. The video shows the host using various Android features such as Wi-Fi connections, search and web browsing. Button layout is still an issue, however, as the iPhone lacks many of the controls common on handsets originally built around Android.

The developers suggest that support for Adobe's Flash technology may be on the way as the project moves forward, although it is still uncertain. Current builds work on the original iPhone and 3G model, while the 3GS will admittedly "take more work."

Well what R all you Winblows Mobile 7 apologists going to do when the iPhone HD comes out in June? Whine more I guess :).

http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/04/21/traders.think.apple.may.get.arm.to.shut.out.rivals/

An unusual rumor late Wednesday has claimed that Apple might try to buy ARM. The gossip was sparked by the iPhone maker's record quarterly results and a believe that the over $40 billion in cash might be used to corner the mobile processor market. Speculation by stock traders sent shares of ARM up 8.1 percent on the UK exchange.
Such a deal would be difficult or potentially impossible for Apple due to legal issues. As most smartphones from HTC, LG, Nokia, Samsung and others now use some form of ARM architecture, Apple could either end licensing or else use its ownership to impose unfavorable terms. Unfair advantages in the processor market have also come under scrutiny and may do so again, as the EU fined Intel for allegedly abusing its dominance to hurt AMD in part because it owned a licensed chip architecture and could use that to squeeze out a competitor.

To date, Apple has never owned an architecture and only just began releasing products with custom processors following this month's shipping of the iPad, whose A4 chip is based on ARM's Cortex-A8.

Well Windows 7's restrictions do just seem to be a straight copy of everything which was wrong with the iPhone (Most of which still is, but some of which even Apple have fixed) so yeah, that seems like copying since I can't imagine 2 people or groups coming up with an identical list of such obviously terrible ideas that sounded good at the time.

Maybe I've missed all the people apologising for WM7... I recall Merc having some interest in it before the details were nailed down but he seems to have developed a sudden interest in Android phones...

Speaking of which, what are the restrictions on Android that you refer to? I don't have an Android phone myself but I know people I've worked with have written, compiled an run their own applications on regular retail phones with no hacks or tricks... If you can do that then you can trivially work around any restrictions Google, your provider, or anyone else tries to put in your way...

Looks like Apple is in some heat over their liquid sensors not working so well.

sure, sure Handy, keep on with *your* 'syndrome' Apple/users- bashing/gangbang whining/dissing thread...we know ur a M$ fanboi. Apple surpassing M$ in mkt cap, musta been the last straw...incensed :D

Censor anything that treads on your hard-fast beliefs...kind of like Dems vs Repubs...only u can't see for your de-Nile.

M$ users TOLD...AFT:

Win users linked 2 Stockholm Syndrome
http://www.storageforum.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8151

Even W7 users <3 Mac OS X & Apple products when they actually *use* them side by side on a regular basis:

Steve Wozniak On Apple Security, Employee Termination, and Gray Powell

04/25/10

Apple under Jobs has become a very evil company. Every time I see I story like this one, or consider how deliberately screwed up the iPad is, I want to boycott Apple until they see the error of their ways.

The problem is, there simply is no alternative to their products. I've always owned both PCs and Macs (I currently use a Mac Pro and a high-end homebrew PC running Windows 7 Professional). I would dearly love to ditch the Mac and rely exclusively on my highly-customized, very open PC.

But I can't bring myself to do it—not yet, anyway (maybe the next big Apple outrage will push me over the edge, and they're coming fast & furious these days). Mac OS simply feels too comfortable, like an old friend whom I can completely trust to give me no nasty surprises. And, my iPhone works. It hugely pisses me off by lacking some features that I very much want, but it's real, not vaporware, and truly Apple supports it.

Windows always ends up letting me down in one way or another. It's like a fickle, cheating girlfriend who's very attractive but can never really be relied on.

Apple, go screw yourselves. But don't forget to send my next OS update.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if a new computer company, with the spirit of the original Apple Computer, would arise in some garage or skunkworks lab and take the world by storm? Why does everyone who tries this fail? Surely it MUST be possible!

If I was an MS fanboy, then why would I own an iPhone and defend it for numerous pages here? You're simply trying to poke. In the words of Wil Wheaten, don't be a dick.

Censor anything that treads on your hard-fast beliefs...kind of like Dems vs Repubs...only u can't see for your de-Nile.

I'm only censoring your crap posts that you won't come back to defend anyway...so there's no point in leaving them open. Don't post tons of large images that have nothing to do with the thread with huge pointless fonts that don't help readability. That's why I removed your post. If you want to remain here, stop poking and being annoying. I'll only censor your threads for so much longer and then I'll be done.

I think the primary difference between your link and Handys Uda is that his appears to be referring to a real issue where as yours was just some guy drawing parallels between a medical paper and some guys in his office for comedy value on a slow news day. If you'd presented it as comedy maybe it would have passed but that's just not how your post reads so what what did you really expect? It's Windows users linked to Stockholm syndrome like the local weatherman is linked to Kevin Bacon, long winded, obscure, and ultimately irrelevant.

And as for the Windows 7 Vs OSX, well they both have their pros and cons. I'd really like W7 to stop hiding settings I need, but that's not as much of a problem day to day as OSX freaking out whenever I boot my machine with one of the monitors switched to another computer. In the end I use Ubuntu more than either OS so what does that tell you? Pretty much nothing since I'm just one person who has their own setup and way of working.

Regarding the moisture sensor issue that seems to buck the trend as far as suing Apple goes in that it seems like a real case where Apple might well have done something wrong. It seems like the sensors are far too easily triggered by events which often don't harm the phone at all so when something happens which should be covered by the warranty the sensors have already been tripped, either by unrelated incidents, or atmospheric conditions. The dock connector sensor particularly makes me think that there was a misunderstanding between the engineers and the policy makers. Engineers put in a sensor which lets you quickly rule out the possibility of water damage, policy makers use it as irrefutable proof that that's what happened.

Looks like all the news sorounding Gizmodo might have been true regarding the iPhone 4. Apple is having their WWDC on June 7-11 where they are expected to tout their iPhone 4.

Computerworld - Apple today announced that its Worldwide Developers Conference will begin June 7, the likely date when the company will introduce its next iPhone.

Still not exactly a surprise when they have done the same thing for the last three years at least right?

I'll try to watch just to see if there are any veiled references to the whole lost phone thing. I'm going to guess there is zero mention where others could make light of the situation with a little humor. I'm not interested in the phone but as a company they are interesting to see how they operate.

Hmm, Intel says Microsofts roadmap for Phone 7 and 8 is not aggressive enough to exploit their Moorestown:

"Apparently someone at Microsoft must’ve peed in Intel’s cheerios because Moorestown won’t be found in any Windows Phone 7 devices. According to Inte it’s more than just a spat over breakfast, Intel claims that Windows Phone 7 is still optimized for very low end ARM SoCs. Intel went on to say that despite the advances in the OS, Windows Phone 7 isn’t progressing fast enough from an architecture standpoint and that it is an “old OS with many of the warts we’re trying to get away from”. Apparently Windows Phone 8 falls into the same category and it too will not be supported by Moorestown."

http://anandtech.com/show/3696/inte...600-series-the-fastest-smartphone-processor/6

Now in the prime days when abuse of monopoly power was just another chapter in the employee handbook, MS would come over for a visit, and explain that they don't take kindly to competition in the software field. And the software project would be shelved. How times have changed. With only a small fraction of the mobile OS market, MS has no way to leverage in this space like they can on the desktop.

Isn't progressing fast enough, or isn't adopting the sort of power management code required to stop Moorestown flushing batteries down the toilet? If Ars are right then Moorestown isn't likely to have great battery life on anything that isn't running Meego, at least in the short term. That said this thing really doesn't look like a phone chip but it'll be interesting to see if anyone sticks it in an iPad competitor.

Yes, the gen after Moorestown looks like the interesting one, where they homologate some of the fiscrete chips.

I'm been quite happy with whatever generic CPU Moto put in the Droid (A855).

This decision probably has more to do with MSs lack of longer term roadmap for Windows Mobile, or morseo their lack of confidence going forward. Also with MS standardising on the 1GHZ SnapDragon, seems they don't want to put out a phone a few months after Mobile 7 comes out with a shitload more potential horsepower.

I've pretty much written off getting a Win-7 or Win-8 phone. Focussing on Android. Would love to get my hands on the HTC Desire. If the HTC Hd2 really drops in price, might consider getting that even though it is WinMo 6.5

Is it all GSM in India? Prob no cheaper to import an unlocked phone from the US I'm guessing, plus potential lack of warranty etc.

There are a couple of CDMA providers who also now offer GSM. Easily, more than the lion's share is GSM. Prices in the U.S. are tempting. TMobile is offering the HD2 without a contract for $449; cheap compared to the $750 it costs to buy here.

I totally don't get the no contract cell phone prices when you can get a 32gb iPod touch for $266. Transmitter and licensing can't cost a couple hundred dollars. I might have gone droid if the no contract phones were priced sanely.

Mubs, do electronics there generally cost that much more?? Or do you think this is more cell company price fixing?

The Sprint EVO will be out on June 4th. I spoke to a couple of Sprint CSRs to be sure, and they're basically mandating that anyone who is not on a service plan that is currently offered by Sprint move to a current service plan, plus pay a $10 surcharge on top of that, purportedly for access to the 4G data network that's currently only available in a couple dozen places in the USA. I have no plans to give up my $30/month phone bill and I'm disappointed that they're setting the service up this way, but in case anyone else is interested, here's what they told me.

The CSR I talked to said that all data service for all customers on the EVO will be considered well and truly unlimited with no cap other than the maximum data rate of the phone's connection. Not 5GB. Not 10GB. Not 100GB/month. There is no added charge for tethering a single PC, though they are charging a MONTHLY fee to unlock a program that allows the EVO to be used as a wireless AP.

The cheapest monthly plan they'll allow anyone to use with the EVO is $70 +$10 EVO surcharge, though there are instructions on Fatwallet to get a $10 discount for employee pricing.

Apparently I'm back to waiting for a compelling Windows Mobile phone if I want to keep my current service. Sweet as a 5Mbit internet connection and a 4.3" screen might be, I'm not paying $70 a month for what amounts to an expensive toy.

Yeah the $10/month fee is a downer. But I'm seriously considering pre-ordering at best buy or radio shack. The shack has a $20 accessory credit for pre-orders. Is there anyplace you can go see it yet? Is it in sprint stores?

You are seriously spoiled with that $30/month phone bill.

I'm on a Sprint family plan that costs 129.99 for 1500 minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited data. Do you think this will qualify me if I pay the $10 4G upcharge?

I have been thinking about this phone way too much.

Best Buy is offering the EVO for a flat $199 with a contract signup. No rebates or crap to fill out.

And yes, I am, and there's no way it makes financial sense to give it up, jesus phone or no.

Depends. Consumer electronics are very expensive. The iPhone 3GS 32GB is about $900 :)

Amazingly, prices on some computer stuff are decent; I bought a Hibachi 1TB drive for the equivalent of ~$100 a couple of months ago - not a multiple of the U.S. price!

You get the best prices in the U.S. Even better than duty free shops in Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. The dynamics of the marketplace in the U.S. are like nowhere else.

Radio shack has a $20 accessory credit if you pre-order it from them. They may treat the mail-in-rebate differently too but I haven't got confirmation of that. In one place someone said best buy and radio shack make it an instant rebate. In another I heard just best buy. Can you pre-order it from a sprint store?
