    Backup solution -- dumb idea?

I just took one of my growing clients to something similar. They now have a dedicated backup server. Here's how it works: Each server has a script that executes at 9PM every night copying any data on the machine to another internal drive that is shared with the backup server. At midnight, the...

    HAL in the navy

Expecting it to is too much. This too was blatant human error. Expecting a computer to protect against even smaller degrees of human error is too much. In this case, what if there wasn't a computer running this sensor, what if it was a human? They'd still recieve conflicting information from...

    HAL in the navy

Good to know humans can still make errors  I'd blame this squarely on the captain. The computer did nothing until the captain attemped an impossible manuver (running 2 props in 2 directions with 1 engine).

Does Dell 1704FPV use the same panel as Samsung's 711T?

I agree with Mark. I couldn't use a 17" screen @ 1280x1024 they way I use my 19". I like having the screen a little further away and being able to lean back in my chair. In contrast my 12" laptop screen @ 1024x768 is acceptible to me because in the typical use of a laptop, your face is much...

Installing anything is still beyond me. I was having issues with X, so I've decided to go directly to console...this is where I really need to start, anyway. I'm just using the 45-day trial of VirtualPC (PowerPack expired :(), I don't have VMWare.

So long as they're both PATA drives I don't forsee any massive issues. IIRC there's a switch that removes all devices and re-installs them on reboot. You'll probably want to to this right before the swap.

    Bad News on Scumware.

I still do a fair amount of "free" fixes for clients that have purchased systems from me, but some of the more PITA clients now get this answer over the phone: "Back up your data, and re-image the system using that DVD I gave you. Did that fix it? Goodbye." After I install a machine, I spend at...
