    Smoothwall Question

Yes Time, that looks like it would do it. But I have to admit, I've had nothing but problems with all the appliance routers I've used. They seem to all need a reset every few months or to have their values re-entered to ot have the VPN reset. I'm really sold on the smoothwall way of doing...

    Smoothwall Question

Kind of. This is a network that includes 5 locations. 3 of them have T-1s one is DSL, one is Cable, and the last has 2 ISDN lines. I'm using the VPN capabilities and they are fantastic. Considering that Fry's is selling new computers with a XP Pro licence for $300, I turn them into smoothwalls...

I have to agree that it's simply amazing how much more a person thinks they're getting when you cut back on the PC and upgrate the I/O equipment. I recently built a system for a home user and cut the CPU, RAM, HDD, and video way back to upgrade from a 17" CRT monitor to a 20" LCD and from the...

    Smoothwall Question

Wow. So I was told that the Total Firewall Control mod would do what I need. I've downloaded the .tgz file, installed cygwin with ssh and sftp, and even managed to connect to the smoothwall via ssh and sftp. Now all I need to do is transfer the file to the /tmp folder on the smoothie...how do I...

    Northbridge cooler replacement help

At the time they only had the square one, so whichever that is. They're also using the original Zalman "flower" heatsinks and 2500+ Barton cores. A very reliable setup.

    Klunk

It had been laying on it's largest side, but it's smart temp was getting a little high. The options were either to get a fan, connect it, and aim it towards the drive; or increase it's exposed surface area. To be honest the entire system was without case; the MB, PSU, and HDDs all sitting on...

    Northbridge cooler replacement help

I have at least a dozen NF7-S boards out there with Zalman passive NB coolers on them. I made the swap before the board was every even powered on. These systems have been in the field at least 2 years (many as servers 24/7) and not had a single issue.

    Klunk

I woke up last night to a most disquieting sound; I instantly knew what it was. A new 7200.8 400GB SATA drive had just fallen from it's second-largest side to it's largest side while doing a full drive copy. As I lay there in the dark I strained to hear the sound of the motor - nothing. It had...

    Off to Vegas...

Yes, it ended fairly well. I gave up on them and started looking after myself; a much easier thing to do. They finally show up around 7AM with some most questionable women and I'm long since sleeping in another room and in much better shape for golf at the Legacy the following day.

Does anyone actually use roaming profiles?

At one point early in my IT life a company I supported used roaming profiles for users who worked both from their workstation and via our terminal server. The points I remember are: 1. Size. Video and CPU usage

I just installed one yesterday that spec'd a specific intel motherboard (chipset with onboard video). What a POS. If they're doing on-the-fly video compression, they might want lots of CPU power. And if they're doing that, large throughput isn't that important. But if they are compressing, I...

That's the problem in living ina country as large as the US; millions can feel a certain way about an issue, and still represent a small minority. Why Canada? I don't disagree in the least that the US is going to be a place I don't want to live within the decade, but Canada? I'm thinking Australia, New Zeland, Spain, even England, but Canada is far too cold for my liking.

From the analysis I've read, most of her brain has attrophied years ago due to lack of activity, so anything approaching normal is completely out of the picture. As one of the PhDs on NPR said "Wouldn't it be worse if she was partially conscious?" I'd go after the parents for neglect.

Yay! Or not... Not entirely the connector's fault though, I partially blame nVidia for putting the SATA connectors right in the middle of the board between the CPU, AGP and DIMM slots. I'm having a hard time thinking of a worse location. I could blame that design problem on ASUS, but it seems...
