    Success!

I just procured an ATi Radeon 9550 AGP for my AXP. Some research indicated that there are, in fact WDDM drivers for it! Dunno if I'm actually going to install 7 on it, but it's nice to know that I can if I want to.

XP computers in a business environment

I kind of want to get my hands on my relative's old A64. Single Core. Same model computer, too! HP Pavilion A700N. Mine's an Athlon XP 3000+ with a 333MHz FSB. Theirs is a single A64. They don't use it anymore. I really hope they don't throw it away. Also, their monitor (exactly the same as...

XP computers in a business environment

I don't want to sound ignorant, but how is Windows Picture and Fax viewer an attack vector, exactly? And wouldn't those vulnerabilities also affect alternate image viewers? mubs: Why not? I do it for my old games that crash WINE. Aside from UT '99 only being playable in a window (seems to be a...

    High(ish) end SSDs

I was under the impression that SSDs outlasted HDDs because of their lack of moving parts. Is this not the case? You can't write to an SSD as many times as you can an HDD?

Fixing UEFI BSOD Errors after disk clone on Windows 7 or 8

I've used Macrium Reflect Free in the past, and honestly I was pretty happy with it. It cloned reasonably fast and had restore media, not that I ever got around to using it or anything... Of course, I haven't changed drives and tried to restore yet either, so I don't know how well that works...

    Holy crap WattOS!

Decided to give Mint another go on the laptop. I'm proud of myself! I managed to get wifi working first try! And now that I've really figured out VirtualBox, virtualization is a good choice for running my old games as it appears WINE is not up to the task. Funnily enough, the web handles...

    Holy crap WattOS!

It's in the vein of Xubuntu and Lubuntu in that it's a version of Ubuntu for low-end and/or older systems. WattOS though runs on far less (192 MB during install, less than 128 MB after) and is by far the most fully featured (including the option of three different shells, not unlike Mint). The...

    Strange laptop repair/parts-finding issue

When I went to replace my keyboard, this was my greatest fear because they made it plain as day that if you screw up you have to replace the whole board, or look ghetto as hell while using an external keyboard.

    Your opinions on "skinning?"

Well, it ran regular aero, transparency and all, just fine. I turned off transparency with the 8 theme enabled and I really notice no difference. If anything it's a little speedier, but nothing I'd write home about.

    Your opinions on "skinning?"

I happen to like the "flat" look and find it easier on RAM. My laptop isn't going to get a discernable speed increase from setting everything to classic.

    Your opinions on "skinning?"

What do you think about the more complex ones, ones that replace certain UI-specific system files? I installed a Windows 8 theme onto my laptop yesterday, and had to break out my Debian DVD so I could copy certain files that were in use while Windows was running. All in all the creator did a...

    Use of IE ... today?

Dunno what Lubuntu used, but XP uses ~200 MB on a 1GB system. I noticed that Windows XP and Vista are not terribly efficient with RAM - XP is more efficient with 512 MB than with 2GB, and Vista isn't efficient with anything, but 7 ran all around very well on my P4, considering it was on minimum...

    Use of IE ... today?

I'm done reinstalling. Windows 7, all my programs, and a fairly invasive Windows 8 theme (invasive as it replaced 99% of my original shell, from explorer buttons to explorer window borders to sounds to cursors to log on screens to boot screens and everything in between), are all installed. You...

    Use of IE ... today?

And while were on the subject of Windows 8.x, I couldn't really tell you if I hated it or not - - I'm having issues playing my games, but that's more hardware and driver related, and while everythings very different, I guess I'll get used to it in the long run. Like the jump from Win3.1 to...

    Use of IE ... today?

I just think that since IE 9 they're starting to actually put some effort into it. I guess they kinda have to, considering they get very stiff competition out of Chrome, Firefox, and even Opera these days. It's almost like they're pulling an IE 4 on us, making IE seem faster but really...

    Use of IE ... today?

Doesn't anyone else find themselves using IE more and more? In my experience, IE 11 is faster than Chrome because its hardware acceleration is enabled by default. PCIe SSD

Whoaly crap. Das'a lotta data throughput. Would it be fair to say that it would be almost as fast as RAM? I never figured out quite how fast RAM was, its speed was always communicated in MHz, not MB(or GB)/sec.

    Unreal Tournament ('99) issues?

    Unreal Tournament ('99) issues?

Quality is terrible and max res is 512x384, but the fact that it runs at all is much better than it was. It's framerate is really high - - it's still playable but all the animation is fluid.

    Unreal Tournament ('99) issues?

I'll be deep fried and dipped in chocolate - - on a whim I set it to Software Renderer (I was using Direct3D support, as I always - - WAIT! I just realized why it wasn't working okay with Direct3D! My DirectX version is still 8.1, I'm sure of it! lemme check...) and it runs great.

    Unreal Tournament ('99) issues?

I installed UT99 on my AXP, its normal routine for my systems. It's GUI runs dreadfully slow, I can't even start a game. I can literally wait tens of seconds for the mouse to move. I could see this happening on a Pentium 133, but on an Athlon XP with a GeForce2 MX card that worked perfectly...
