    Crap selection of laptops

Wow, that person was really unhelpful. I'm sorry Merc. I'll never write S*ny the way they do ever again. It's a curse word in my book. On that subject, there really isn't anything fundamentally different between 2k pro and server, is there? Server just supports more RAM, right?

it is looking really hopeful right now The new drive is really noisy, but it's working and much faster than it was off the old drive too I'm wondering how I ever got XP installed properly off the old drive

Lubuntu or Mint support for old hardware

Wow, you had to recompile your own kernel? I'd have backed out.... that's too advanced for me. I'm still trying to get lubuntu installed... Jesus it's slow loading off a CD... Some good news, though... it successfully shrunk my xp partition and made its own, didn't trash my HDD - - SHIT...

Hah, took a quick look at the PC specs from '04 page. Looks like my GX270 isn't far off the mark - - w/ gigabit lan, sata, dvd rom, 80 GB HDD, and 2.8 GHz P4... AND 6 USB 2.0 ports... AND a whole gigabyte of RAM...

Lubuntu or Mint support for old hardware

Okay, so I have Lubuntu 13.10 on a CD right here. MATE is a 400 MB download? Dammit, looks like I'm heading to Mickey D's after this damnable snow clears. I'll stick with LXDE till then, I guess. Thanks for doing my dirty work guys! Dirty work here being looking up hardware support. Man, that...

    TaskManager replacement for XP/Vista/7

This looks pretty cool. I'll have to try it whenever I can get around to it. Also - - in the screenshot showcasing the CPU clock speed - - 1.97 GHz? Kinda oddball, but it was probably meant to be 2 GHz. But 1.97 GHz = 1970 MHz, so... kinda sorta wayyy off. I'm not saying that's not what the CPU...

Lubuntu or Mint support for old hardware

I recently got a hold of a Dell Optiplex GX270, and although it is running XP quite happily, XP doesn't have a whole lot of life in it. Do Lubuntu or Mint support an Intel 82865G onboard gfx chipset and SoundMAX integrated audio? I want to dual boot, running XP for my games while running Lubuntu...

    Getting an SSD!

How big was it? Also, just like that, Windows 7 goes back on. My copy of Win8 refused to activate, and I wasn't about to do some hoop jumping for an OS that I really didn't like. I'm getting the aforementioned ssd, and I'm just going to get rid of all my games and stuff that I don't use. I...

    Getting an SSD!

Now Windows 8 is installed. Though I do have settings set and files copied, I do not have apps installed, nor will I install them until I get my SSD, which by the way, I actually am getting. I'm just gonna go the "reset everything" route. A peculiar thing is that PAE is pretty much enabled, but...

    Getting an SSD!

Srsly? Wow. Well, it's kinda a moot point now, seeing as I am now installing Windows 8. 32 bit, because I heard about PAE and how to use it. I'm sorry for being so wish washy. Thanks for the input.

    Lenovo Thinkpads

Wow, derailed that didn't I? Well, back to the topic: If I could go with a ThinkPad, I'd go for a T420 not just because the model number's funny (tee hee), but because it seems to be the better value for the money. 100 MHz isn't a noticeable difference anymore, hasn't been for a few years now...

    Lenovo Thinkpads

^ I lol'd. I want to chime in and say that, if I could afford it, I'd be heading for a ThinkPad. But realistically, I would have to settle for a Dell Latitude, because they aren't terrible for the money. But PC sales are dipping in general, and things look bleak, though I will say I don't think...

    Getting an SSD!

After further deep-thinking I've decided not to get an SSD right now after all - - I just went through the trouble of setting up Windows the way I like it, and all my programs too - - I don't want to do that again. Also, I will wait until such time as larger SSDS are in my price range (with...

Got my OG Samsung GTab on ICS!

I followed a guide somewhere on how to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab (which normally supports only up to Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread) onto 4.0.3 ICS. Mic doesn't work, camera's a bit flaky but I don't use either of those anyway. Everything else works perfect, much smoother than on Gingerbread. It...

I've decided to put the SSD into the laptop (which I actually did get, today in fact). Pentium Dual-Core T4300 @ 2.1 GHz, 4GB RAM, Intel Mobile 45 chipset. Dell Inspiron 1545. Not much of an upgrade, but it's portable and free.

    Your first computer?

The computers we had at my first school were all iMacs, that is, the old iMacs with the colorful cases and handle on the CRT casing. I want to say they ran Mac OS X 10.2 or something. This was in 2003, mind, when 500 MHz PowerPCs weren't that special. The oldest computer I used in school was a...

I'm not saying I want to upgrade the GPU, I'm just weighing the benefits. Whatever it's running is a formidable upgrade over my aging PDC E2.2K, and to be honest it might just have a decent enough onboard GPU to run Skyrim. That's it. That's the full extent of the torture I put on a GPU. Skyrim...

Fastest feasible system for Windows 98se?

There are people who torture Windows 98se by <a=href"http://www.winhistory.de/more/386/386vers.htm">forcing it to run on a 386SX</a>. I would like to do exactly the opposite. Let 98se live out it's golden years on a PC that, while far more than enough for it, would be just enough for 98se to...

Exactly how much data does this consume over the internet connection? I'm on a limited mobile wifi unit (it's that or dialup where I'm at), and if I eat up all the data my parents will kill me.

I run Skyrim on this machine. I think it will handle it pretty well. Started it. Should I set up my P4 as a dedicated folding machine? I don't have funds to drop a couple grand on a brand spanking new i7 with dual GTX TITANs, sorry.

Would you buy a vomit box if it came with decent hardware for a reasonable price?

Because they save about 3¢ worth of plastic that way. Funny enough, my Dad bought that for me (I guess he got tired of me hijacking his computer to screw around with). Money was tight (still is, hence the reason I'm still using it) and we had to consider what we could afford. That was...

Which OS Upgrade for old computer?

I second this. I'd say try a lighter-weight distro such as Lubuntu, and see if a Windows like UI can't be found (again, Lubuntu is what I'm referencing, though I'm sure XFCE is available for everything else, and it feels much more like Windows than Unity or GNOME.

Which OS Upgrade for old computer?

I'd go with Windows 7. It's supported until 2020 while regular Windows 8 (not 8.1) is only until 2015. I'm pretty sure Windows 8.1 won't run on it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Would you buy a vomit box if it came with decent hardware for a reasonable price?

Still, coming from a prebuilt manufacturer like Dell I was surprised they didn't pull another Dimension 2300 and give me 512 MB RAM to get the price that low. The 2300 had a fairly beefy Pentium 4 but only 128 MB RAM, and this in ~2002ish when 512 MB was mostly universal. It sold for $300 and...
