Would you buy a vomit box if it came with decent hardware for a reasonable price?

If you were to take a look at this in 2008, would you label it a vomit box? Refurbished Dell Inpiron 530 G33M01 mobo (only supports up to Core 2uo, dunno what specific model, and 4 GB is max RAM capacity... The G33M02 based ones can use up to a Core 2 Quad Extreme I believe, with 8 GB RAM on a...

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

And the sad thing is that to get their machine to be sane again they need to shell out cash to have someone re-install Windows 7 on there. Most simply don't have the know-how required to install it themselves. Heh, if they saw how installing Windows 95 and 98 was when you were using a system...

    2TB SSDs

What is sad is that I'd never fill a 128 GB one. I'm using just over 40 GB on my 250 GB HDD. That is with Windows 7 Ultimate (albeit x86, it still takes up a ridiculous amount of HDD space by itself), Skyrim, various older (but still space-sapping) games and their ISOs, and about 4 GB worth of...

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

Pfft, what is this "buy" you speak of? When I want to experiment with an old version of Windows I just download an ISO from winworldpc.com. It also has abandonware applications and serials for everything they host in the forums. I'd also reccommend Vetusware and OldApps.com (for applications)...

Would you buy a vomit box if it came with decent hardware for a reasonable price?

Yeah, my main beef with Apple is that they take cheap foxconn hardware and stuff it into a shiny case and sell it for $1300 at least, when it costs them $400 at most to make it. I understand the main point of a business is to make as much of a profit as possible, but jeez. Embezzlement much?

Chrome or Firefox & Why (Windows 8)

Haha, wow. And I thought I had to deal with some stupid people. Did you have to delete each queued copy one by one?

Chrome or Firefox & Why (Windows 8)

That whole "200 copies of Minecraft.exe in the download folder" sounds too hilariously stupid to be true, but I'm sure it is. Yeah, I suppose java isn't really essential. But Flash is still very big, that much can't be denied. It's a major point of detraction from the Apple iDevices is the...

    Free DVD Copying options

Are you talking about movie DVDs or data DVDs? If you just need to make and burn ISOs, I'd use Daemon tools lite and Astroburn lite. Daemon tools lite can even mount virtual drives. I think it has a disc copy feature too, but I don't think it'd work with movies. If you have to make movie DVDs...

Would you buy a vomit box if it came with decent hardware for a reasonable price?

I think it'd be interesting to see what people think on this. Personally, I'd have to see just what hardware it's got. I dunno about an FM2 or Axx, I've never seen one in action, but if it was like a Pentium G or even a Celeron G or Core 2 Quad I'd jump on it for a decent price. Just about...

Chrome or Firefox & Why (Windows 8)

Chewy, you raise a good point, but Java not being for the general populace? There are plenty of java applets out there for the average person, if you look for them. Also, a lot of people play Minecraft, which requires some form of java. Not gonna elaborate here. But you did raise a good point...

Chrome or Firefox & Why (Windows 8)

For Windows I'd use nothing less than Chrome. Or IE 10, on machines that can really handle it. On Linux however, I see no difference in speed and reliability between the two. Then it's really a matter of preference. But IE 10 seems fairly quick, and it is fully Acid test compliant (make of...

    Lubuntu Graphics Glitches?

I actually ended up using the nvidia-current package, using the terminal command "sudo apt-get install nvidia-current". I don't know how it worked, because I was sure nVidia had dropped support for the GeForce 2 MX. I thought I had broke-ed-ed it at first because the bootup logo was text only...

    Lubuntu Graphics Glitches?

Some icons don't show up and sometimes my highlighted text shows up as a hard-to-see and ugly almost puke-green color. I am running Lubuntu 13.10 on: Intel Pentium 4 1.9 GHz, Williamette core, 4 x 100 MHz FSB ASUS P4B mobo w/ Intel i845 chipset 1 GB SDR RAM nVidia GeForce 2 MX 32 MB VRAM WD800...

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

I put Lubuntu on it. I'm actually posting from it: I am very impressed with how much more snap this thing has with it. Installing programs isn't too difficult either! For a system that pre-dates DDR RAM and USB 2.0 by mere months, the ability to view YouTube videos in 720p (provided one allows...

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

I don't have the kind of bandwidth required to download something without being absolutely sure that it will work. Ubuntu, I know for a fact doesn't support my wireless. Nether does Debian. Or Mint. I might as well take a card out of my computer -- You know what, I will. I have a USB one...

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

It doesn't. Also, the only OSes that support my wireless card that I can feasibly run are Windows 2000 and XP. Unless, that is, Solaris supports a Dynex Enhanced G Wireless Desktop Card. Doesn't even have a model number, it's so cheap-y.

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

Well, that was fast. And disappointing. I could find no such option in the BIOS. Crap. Well, It was fun trying, anyway. Maybe I'll have a bit of fun with my main when I get a new one, make it run Windows 9 or whatever they come up with next.

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

Hehe, not quite. Not yet, at least: I have updated my BIOS to the latest version. I'm going to see if I can find some option in it that lets me enable/disable NX. My CPU supports it, but my mobo... might not. Ima give it a whirl and post the results.

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

I feel like an idiot now... ONE simple Google search revealed what I wanted to know. No, it does not support PAE nor NX. It kicks me out with the error code 0x0000005D. I looked it up and figured out that my poor old P4 just got cut a break.

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

My Windows 8 Pro DVD doesn't boot on my Pentium 4 1.9 GHz, on an ASUS P4B motherboard. It has the i845 chipset, not the i845m or whatever it is that adds USB 2.0. It's one of the earlier ones, predating DDR RAM by about a year (sticker on case says August 2002.) It uses the 4 x 100 MHz FSB. It...

What constitutes "basic computer knowledge" in 2014?

In my humble opinion, basic computer knowledge consists of knowing: -how to turn it on -how to run a web browser and use a search engine (no Googling Google to find Google) -how to use a word processor and save and open documents, as well as printing when applicable -how to do basic drive...

    Everyday monitors

Yeah, I'm terribly nearsighted... But I must say, I agree on the ASUS monitors. Windows 8.1

I guess I'm sticking with Windows 7 until the end of time... Well, it's not as bad as some guy sticking with Windows 95 OSR2 (that he modified specifically to exclude IE as he's a anti-IE fanatic) to this very day, apparently even maintaining his website with his Athlon XP 2500+ w/ 512 MB RAM...

Hm... I don't know if you can still buy these direct, but the HP vs15 is pretty good. I don't think HP manufactured this one, or any monitor for that matter... It has built in speakers too.
