Gary, I have used several USB 2.0 and Firewire readers. Performance was about the same - probably limited by the CF card. Can you post some Atto results for comparison? Consider yourself lucky. I only get about 90 files on a 1GB card.

What are using the memory for? PS cameras certainly don't need anything near the high write speeds. I would be inclined to go with the Lexar, unless it is necessary to transfer the card in less than one minute. Even so, you may find that your reader cannot reach 10 MB/sec.

Tony, Yes there are. In addition to the upgrade to SP3 or SP4, you should change the registry to properly utilize the full capacity. Maxtor has a file (search for big_drive_enabler.exe) that does this directly. It works with SP4 and all >137GB drives, not just Maxtors.

Of course we remember that, Tony. I actually converted to Win2000 at about the same time and am also at about the end of the useful life of my installation. I cannot decide whether to reinstall 2000 or upgrade to XP Pro. The conversion to XP Pro should be much less expensive than reinstalling...

I do not recommend 6500K lighting for general use. Some sensitive people suffer more depression and are less productive in bluer light. 5000K or even 5500K lights are more pleasant and tend to make people feel better. :)

BreezeBrowser is an inexpensive, yet versatile application that also converts the RAW files. I don't know which camera you have, but it supports most of the RAW/NEF formats as well as the usual TIF, jpeg, etc. DL the trial version and check it out.

There may be something wrong with your setup because a USB 2.0 or firewire CF reader should be much faster than a PCMCIA card and does not suffer from the high CPU utilization. It takes me a little over 4 minutes to transfer a full 2GB card with either a USB 2.0 or firewire reader vs. around 27...

I use an old 20 GB notebook drive in one of those cheap USB 2.0/firewire enclosures. The data transfer rate is ca. 17 MB/s, pretty much limited by the drive.

Similar story here. I had a new CF card that would not format in-camera or in Windows. I was able to fdisk and format it in DOS though.
