    Smoking toys and heart attacks...

OK now I see. Back in the 70s we called the cars low riders. I dunno about the "rice." The PS for the lights should have some safety device but maybe they are poorly designed. I am glad there was no serious damage. I would not have a light in the case cause dust accumulates easily and...

    Cheetah dying or what?

It has 22A on the 12V rail. The video card is old cool one that has no fan and there is only one P4 CPU. There should be should be power left for four hard drives I think.

    Cheetah dying or what?

I played with the wires and I see nothing unusual in the event logs. The Asus probe was running last week and did not alarm. The failure must be fast. This is the P4 system so a drop on the 12V rail could cause all sorts of errors. Assuming it is the PSU, that would be the least expensive...

    Cheetah dying or what?

Over the past few weeks one of the hard drives in my PC has been spontaneously spinning down and then quickly restarting. I think it is the Cheetah 15k.3 (C: drive) because the BSOD is immediate but there are three other hard drives too. I switched around the molex plugs from the PSU in case...

    I need a tripod.

Hakuba and Slik may be good options at the low end, but I have no experience with them. There are often used Hakubas floating around as people upgrade. The number of sections is often a big factor in cost. Even the cheaper Gitzo 3-section CF tripod legs would be in your price range, <$300...

Seagates new laptop drives are finally avaliable..

Here. I replaced a Fujitsu 5400 rpm drive with one. The 7k60 is really fast for a notebook drive and quiet too. :) (Ok, it is not a 15K.3, but still.) I wish they also made one in the 30Gb capacity.

    sick at work?

I go in if I can function. We get no sick days per se, so vacation days are lost. The worst is travelling when sick. It's no fun being part of the global respnse team and having to fly to a site, sit around three days when the temps are well below zero, and suffer with a "10" cold virus. :(

    [NEWZ] Monster Scuzzy Hard Drive!

I missed the 5 platters, Blake. These drives are a good indication that the technology is progressing. Even 60GB/platter is a healthy increase over the available 36GB/platter 10K drives. The other players may be holding out for 72GB/platter at 10K to achieve the traditional 2x SCSI capacity...

Very impressive, but won't Seagate, Maxtor and Fujitsu also have similar drives? I would like a big Cheetah if it is not a long wait. Seagate has been good for me.

    Drive Spinning Down

    Drive Spinning Down

I have the IDE drive in an external FireWire/USB 2 enclosure. The drive spins down about every 10 minutes if not accessed. When accessed, the computer hesitates until the drive spins up again. Yeah, the behaviour is normal, but is there something that can be done? Maybe some simple ap that...
