PC Gaming = World of Suck

http://www.stairwell.com/doc/siskel.html "Not a lot of people may know this, but Gene was such a fan of his subject that he collected memorabilia from his favorites. Until recently, he was the proud owner of the white suit that made John Travolta a legend in Saturday Night Fever. You don't make...

    Best drive imaging software?

True Image runs directly from the CD (creates and restores images) and does not require installation. Once installed it can be used to make bootable recovery CDs/DVDs. TI seems to be easy to use even for the computer novice.

There are about 50 power outages a year around here (most very brief), so I have the TVs/cable boxes/DVR, etc. on the USPs, not to mention the computer systems. A UPS is so inexpensive that every room should have them. The only annoyance is with all of those beeps going off when the outage is...

    New camera: Canon 20D?

Doug, Almost all macro lenses have excellent image quality. The primary consideration is usually focal length. However, we don't know what you are doing with the system or which 35mm film SLR you were using previously. There are a lot of general purpose 2-3 lens setups for the...

    New camera: Canon 20D?

I see no mention that they are an authorized Canon dealer. The item could have fallen off the back of a truck for all you know or could have been purchased and is now being resold. In these cases the warranty is void, not to mention any rebates. I only buy from B&H or one of the reliable...

    Camera suggestions please?

Technology is marching down the toilet in some cases, such as the 1.8" hard drives and SD cards. Bah, humbug. I'll whomp them with one of my 1Ds MK II bodies in each hand. :)

    New camera: Canon 20D?

As you should know Canon has a triple rebate program in effect, so make sure to buy from an authorized dealer if the lens or flash is on the program. Also, many Canon lenses tend to fall apart or otherwise require service so a US warranty is advisable. ;)

    Camera suggestions please?

Going from CF to SD is not a good thing, except in the smallest of PS cameras. CF cards are more robust and easier to handle, especially with gloves on. The tiny SD cards get lost very easily when dorpped on the ground. The lack of high quality PS digital cameras is a major probelm. In the...

Can USB/Flash drives be seen/used in DOS?

Yes, and it is also possible to boot from a CF card and USB 2 reader. I have several utilities on a old 128MB card which is otherwise useless. Drive Image, Parturition magic, old versions of Ghost, and True Image work fine.

    Camera suggestions please?

CF is basically dead in compact P/S cameras. Even the cheapo Nikon D50 now uses SD media and one would expect that the next Canon cheapo DSLR will use SD as well. The choices are based on size and compatibility between different cameras and devices the target user owns. Of course the high-end...

    New camera: Canon 20D?

Many of the the people at DPReview are trolls and/or fools. ;) Cards can make a huge difference in write times, which are often barely related to specified speeds. The Extreme 3 is the best, but Ultra II is fine as well. Lexar cards are notorious for incompatibililty issues with Canon (they...

    Camera suggestions please?

Scott, Presumably you have checked the major review sites, i.e, DPReview, steve's digicams, imaging-resource, etc. I am not happy with any PS cameras and cannot ofer you any specific advice. However, I would not limit the camera to one that uses AA cells. The newer digital cameras are...

Digital mostly saves money at the low-mid range or for pros shooting >50,000 frames per year with high end bodies and earning their keep. That does not include the cost of computers, printers, software, etc. Since the better bodies depreciate $1000-4000 per year each (and several bodies are...

    New camera: Canon 20D?

Well, the 350D is very plasticky, has a 12F compared to 20F buffer for jpegs (the RAW buffer is the same so there is no impact for serious users), has only 3FPS compared to 5FPS, has fewer AF zones, has less pixels/smaller sensor, has no rear control dial to change the aperture or exposure...

    New camera: Canon 20D?

I don't know about the digicams, but Imaging-Resource.com reviews of DSLRs are rather weak (and sometimes nearly silly) compared to DPR for example. DCresource.com seems to review only digicams or the cheaper DSLRs, but no pro models. I think it is probably best to read as many reviews as...
