Which macro are you using? The 60/2.8 EF-S on an APS-C sensor should be fine for most perspectives and the optics are impressive. How large are you trying to print the images?

I noticed that Samsung now makes notebook drives. The 120GB 5400 rpm model is very cheap (~$185 as of this writing). Are they any good for mass storage? Three of those drives in external USB enclosures would be useful for my travel needs and relatively inexpensive.

I don't know much about the older IBM drives, but the 7K60 was faster than anything in its time. The main problem was that the heel of my palm would become uncomfortably hot after long sessions. I was concerned about the reliablity of such a hot drive in my little P5K.

No way. I have many Seagate 5400 RPM drives and they are not very fast. Even the old Hitachi 7200 rpm drives were faster.

It is a good idea to blow out the CPU heatsink/fan once in a while to remove dust. Even a small layer of dust can appreciately reduce thermal conductivity to the air.

Have you actually measured the power consumption? I tested a system a few years ago and the actual watts were much less than the values obtained from the online calculator. How many years will it take to recoup the costs of hardwawre upgrades, not to mention your time?

Unless you need to photograph moving subjects in dim light, the 24-105 IS is the best choice to fit inbetween the 10-22 and 100-400. Then you can leave the 18-55 and 60 when not needed. The 24-105 will also work on a real camera body should you decide to upgrade later. The 24-70 is very nice...

I did not know that WD had progressed to 120Gb notebook drives. It is unfortunate that the drive only has a 2MB buffer.

My case only has 10 bays – 6x 3.5' and 4x 5.25". All of the 3.5" bays are occupied by HDs, two of the 5.25" bays hold optical drives, one holds a removable HD enclosure, and the other 5.25" bay is occupied by the SCSI boot drive behind a switch panel.

I have the 3500A and 3550A and there is not much difference. At the other extreme, Western Digital produced about five variations of 200GB drives with the same model name. Go figure.
