    Inexpensive laptops.

Greg, Do not be concerned about the ATA mode. If the notebook supports > 32 GB drives (basically anything from 2000 on) it should be OK up to at least 120 GB, since the drive will revert to the highest ATA mode supported by the controller. I don't know about Macs. I have a couple of the...

    Inexpensive laptops.

Do Thinkpads have Firewire yet? Last time I looked they did not, which is logical for most business users but a major oversight for others. The Panasonics are overpriced for the features if ruggedness is not needed and the better models are not distributed properly in the US.

    Xbox 360 stupidity

The pet rocks were rather boring, being just an ordinary small stone. The kids tired of them quickly. I don't remember that anyone stood in long lines waiting for pet rocks either.

Well, "most radical" is a relative term. And "radical" in SoCal also has a non-political connotation. There were too many years in Santa Monica and Malibu I guess.

Tony, Yes, you need a calibration device. There are three consumer level ones that provide results sufficient for most users: Pantone Colorvision Spyder2, X-rite/Monaco and Gretag Macbeth. I don't know all the current models and cannot make a specific recommendation, but most work on the same...

The drive could have been damaged in handling or the electronics could have been subjected to who knows what, either of which is much more important than a mere 156 hours of use. The main thing I would check is the Maxtor warranty status onlinw.

My computer has started to smell.

Silicon has no odor. However, there are plenty of volatile residues in the manufacturing of the the PCB and components. Generally an elevated temperature increases the concentration of the volatiles that you are smelling.

    Older Video card?

I will only use the P650 for three months at most. It will be a waste since an AGP card will be useless in my next machine, but at least it is not too expensive. I'm against almost all video games, and would not even risk installing them on my system.

Serious birders end up with a 600/4 sooner or later. ;) The 600/4 IS is too heavy for me, so I use a 500/4 IS. However, I don't care much for birds unless they are large and/or easy targets like penguins, ostriches, etc.

    New camera: Canon 20D?

Were you plannning to use the 1.4x on the 100-400? The 100-400 is weakest at the long end and a TC makes it unacceptable IMO. Only the 1-series bodies focus at smaller than f/5.6, so AF would be lost. Taping the contacts or using an off-brand TC will allow the 20D to attempt AF, but it will...

Tony, Most of the pros in the US that need to work with both hands free prefer the Kinesis belt systems. I don't care for that stuff, but I do use the Kinesis long lens bag for the 500/4 IS and of course their beanbags are the best. ;)

    New camera: Canon 20D?

The 135/2 is a truly excellent lens, but has limited utility. I would not recommend it for a novice shooting with 1.6x bodies. On a 35mm body it is a portrait "head shot" lens. On a 1.6x body it is too long for most portraits, but useful for some low-light sports. If you are looking for the...

Hot pixels are fairly common in sensors, much like stuck pixels are in LCDs. Hot pixels are not usually a cause for defect unless there are a certain number and griuping. Even the 1Ds MK IIs have a few. Usually hot pixels are more noticeable only at higher ISOs and longer exposures. One...

    Wide angle

17 mm on the 1.6x sensor is about 28 mm in the 35 mm format. It is wide enough for general use but not wide enough for many landscapes, interiors, and travel. In the 70s the widest lens I had was a 28/2.0 Nikkor and it seemed to be wide enough most of the time. Later I switched to a 24...

    Wide angle

Tony, Since 18 mm on a 1.6x sensor is often not wide enough, Canon developed the 10-22 to be very similar to the 16-35 on a 35 mm body. As you already own the 100-400, a good choice would be to add the 10-22 and the 24-105 IS. Of course the 17-85 is the other option, but 17 mm is not much...
