Doug, I have this one. The shell is metal and assembles with two thumb screws. The fan is reasonably quiet and keeps the drive cool. It has a real power switch.
BTW, there was another 5+ minute outage. Ctrl-C is your friend.
Actually 3x200GB is not a bad idea. I wonder why nobody has done that, except perhaps that it does not fit into the market slots. Several manufacturers will probably have 3x250GB drives later this year, so it may be a moot point.
Which are the best external drives, Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, etc., or integrators such as LaCie, Iomega, etc.? 500GB seem to be the sweet spot of efficiency for the purpose. Thanks.
I have both the Spyder 2 Pro and the Eye-One Display 2. I prefer the latter as it offers more control and more accurate profiles IMO. One can see the difference in display calibration strategy by watching the process. The Eye-One measures not only an ascending R, G, B then grey patches, but...
I thought about that one, but it seems a little pricey for the purpose. I also read some reviews (can't find the link) indicating that the Sony was unreliable. There is a fairly cheap one, the TEAC CD-RW880. I dunno.
I am particularly interested in the low power modes of the 7K1000. Are they controlled by the drive or through drivers, controller firmware, or what? The newer Hitachi drives have substantially lower 12V startup currents than other brands, which is nice, and the slower spinup is not a problem.
Kids are always coming up with those wild schemes. :) One question leaps to mind. If the system leaks and floods or other damage is incurred, would the insurance cover it, assuming that the plumbing modifications were not done by a licensed contractor?
Less than about 120GB seems to be a throwaway now. I have about 39 drives, mostly 200-750GB with an average 250-300GB. More 750GB and larger drives would be nice.
The Ultra II 8GB card is known to be slow compared to smaller Ultra II cards. Use the Extreme III (20 MB/sec.) or Extreme IV (40 MB/sec.) where faster download speeds are desired.
I wish I could justify the cost of all those fancy systems. :( Of course if I spent $20K on the storage servers, where would there be funds for the trips to obtain the images? The HDs would be empty.
David,
Do you have all of the data on one RAID 5 array and then the backup on another array? That would be too much risk for me as arrays can become corrupted when drives are kicked out or controllers can fail. Unless the second array is in a separate location from the primary, there would...
That would be nice, but how is it backed up and how do you stand the noise? The problem I have is too many 250-300GB drives, worth nothing to sell, vs. buying a bunch of 500GB or larger drives. Now I have only five 500GB drives (one external only) and a couple of 750GB drives (ATA), a couple...
Well, that is intersting, but the ATM I frequent has an open channel design like a gas station pump, where the card goes in only partway. That trap would not work in such a case because the user is always gripping the card.
OK, I get it. When not logged in the times are EST, but after logging in they are CST. However, my default time zone is EST. (It must have been like that by default; I did not set it.) Is anyone else experiencing the same issues?
