    So ..... who wants a 1D III?

By most accounts 1D MK III is quieter than the 1vHS at 10FPS. That one was terribly loud at 10FPS and not so bad, but still loud, at 7FPS. After you use the fast cameras like F5 (w/9 cells), 1vHS (w/NP-E2), 1D MK II etc, for some time, the sounds are second nature. Current Canon bodies tend...

    Tannin's new bird-watching lens

No, it must use a rear filter. The newer Canon long teles (with IS) use a 52mm rear filter and the Sigma one may be larger, but not that much. The front of modern long teles (Canon and Nikon at least) have a built in UV filter to protect the front elements. The newer ones have a slight...

    Tannin's new bird-watching lens

Heh, I considered posting about the 200-500/2.8. :) It is really more of a showpiece lens than a practical one. It is too large and heavy to use on a monopod for sports and Sigma already has the 300-800/5.6 for the birds. The 200-500 won't fit as an airline carryon. As ISO 6400 and beyond...

DST change, oh how I love thee

Yeah, I heard the same at three businesses already. What, is Microsoft so stupid they never considered that DST would ever change in the future? Savings time return to standard time was dispensed with as recently as the 70s to save fuel. Before that was during WWII wacky DST and DDST, and...

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

Perhaps he is referring to IS? Some of the old-style IS lenses experience rapid image drift when stabilization is engaged on a tripod. For example IS should be turned off when the Canon 300/4 IS and 100-400 IS are used on a tripod. Teles introduced in the past 7 years or so do not have this...

More bits is better when using curves that squeeze details from the highlights and especially the shadows. Of course extra bits are only useful if the sensor has sufficiently low noise to provide meaningful data, which is presumably the case. I'd have less interest in the extra bits for...

    So ..... who wants a 1D III?

Tony, Buy the 1D MK III now and get a 1Ds MK III later if needed. Unless the latter is designed with a substantially lower pixel pitch, you will be better off with the former for most wildlife. The 1D series 1.25x crop factor is undesirable for landscapes however.
  39. LunarMist

    So ..... who wants a 1D III?

I think Tony will really like it compared to the 20D. The 1D MK III's resolution is slightly less, but given the high ISO performance it will be reasonably usable with 500 and 2x. Generally 1D MK II/n users are happy with the announcement, but 1Ds MK II users since 2004 are mainly disappointed...

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

I'm not a PJ or sports photog, nor do I need to shoot in caves. Canon still has nothing to compare to the linear density of the D2X and no decent long zoom like the 200-400VR. At least if new Canon had 12MP at 8FPS, or better yet 14MP at 7 FPS, it would be of some use. Of course that would...

Is all that stuff really needed for driving on pavement even in snow? A guy at work has one of those Subaru type of station wagons with just normal (rather small) tires and drove over some pretty snowy/icy roads, passing stuck vehicles without much problems. It made me nervous though.
