Here are the read speeds for a 16GB Extreme Pro CF (rated 90 MB/sec.) and a 32GB Extreme Pro SDHC U1 (rated 45 MB/sec.) on the Lexar USB 3.0.

    External Drives

XP64 is the oldest OS I would be using, but eventually perhaps Windows 8 if I make it. I know XP64 does not natively support the 3TB drives, but the USB 3.0 circumvents that. However, individual drives are out of the question. I need to replace at least a small 4-bay 8TB individual eSATA box...

Dead AMD 3200+, Dead ram, and possibly Power supply

That about sums it up. :) DDR2 is so different than DDR it should have been easy to see the difference.

Somehow this drive does not seem to be working right, when it was fine for a year in the laptop. :(

How can it be anything else than the wrong kind of RAM? Do you have photos of the two kinds of RAM?

    External Drives

Are there any external enclosures of the compact tower type that house 4-5 3TB drives and be used with older OS? I don't need the RAID, though JBDOG could work if it can tolerate being separated later on. Preferably the interface would be USB 3.0 or maybe SATA, but no sluggo GbE NAS stuff.

    SSD reliability

I don't think there is much if any research. They just summarized (rather limited) data from other sources. That is probably most of what is available for free.

    WD 1TB 2.5"

Tech support has not done anything about the Samsung drive. Does anybody know when the WD drives are shipping? It is probably a long shot, but maybe they function where the Samsungs do not.

That would be fine for resistive loads, yet I suspect the actual power drain is not such a simple equation.

Warning about what? The SSDs seem OK compared to hard drives. Do some people think they are infallible?

    Fast build on the bench

Meh. I've had one for going on a year now. Six cores are nice for LR, PS, PTGUI, etc., but the CPU really pumps out heat under load when the voltage is increased to reach 4.3 or 4.4GHz. If you are going to run that night and day maybe 4GHz is about right.

    RAW support in Windows 7

DPP launches in less than a seocnd, though it is not so good with >3000 files in a folder. Breeze Browser and Photomechanic are excellent apps, and of course there is LR.

I have a multitude of CF and other readers. For USB 2.0, the OmniFlash Uno! UDMA is my favorite small one. Reads/writes are capped by the USB 2.0. Writes are about 30MB/sec. and reads are a few MB/sec. faster. The Lexar Dual Slot readers perform well too, though the mechanics are hit and...

That is WAY too much area for the power plant. How do we know that the land will not have other value later, not to mention messing up the environment in large chunks? That con artist dude uses the word useless to describe the land. Perhaps he is the useless one. ;)

Not so much at SR compared to here. That place underwent massive changes when the forums were restored. The Bar and Grille section was fairly new then and really exploded after the MBF. So many of the regulars stopped posting or posted very little, and others came here.

Most of the big box store staff are the uneducated salespeople types that regurgitate the specs until you want to scream. :frusty: I picked up the remote, aimed it at one and pushed the power button, but he did not get it. There are maybe one or two people in the stores who know anything.

Liquid nitrogen is rather dangerous to handle as it can splash or leak from improper containers that cannot handle temperature changes. We had some employee frostbite injuries back in the day. Liquid nitrogen is not something that most people need in their homes anyway.
