    RAID JDOG

Internally there are 6 main data drives (2TB), not to mention the SSDs. There are 3x 2TB internal backup drives and 3x 2TB external eSATA backup drives. The externals are connected individually to a SIL 3114-based card and housed in a small 4-bay Addonics enclosure that is controlled by an X10...

No. How do you get 500 MB/sec. backups between two computers? I'm not happy with the GbE.

    RAID JDOG

That's exactly the kind of complexity and mediocre performance I'd like to avoid.

    RAID JDOG

How is that the same? RAID is not a backup. When data is accidentally deleted or overwritten you are screwed. You can't power the other drives down 23.5 hours per day either.

And what if the whole PC blows? How do you access the data on another system?

But Hitachi is going of business. What will you do to replace dead drives or can you mix brands?

The 3TB Hitachi is mentioned. It looks like EggFace has the silver colored version available, but I'm not confident of their packing/shippping.

Yes, I mean this one at SF. It is struggling at the usual 8PM CDT.

    USB 3.0 drives

I'm not sure about that one, but I had an experience with a WD Passaport. eSATA isn't practically any faster than UBS 3.0 for slow drives.

My day with tech support, and finally getting things working

I don't see any difference on this site from a speed factor of 10:1. Maybe if you can discern 1/10 of seconds there is something different. The main issue is the performance slowdowns on the SR server once in a while.

    RAID JDOG

Thanks. So can I RAID 0 the Samsung or Hitachi advancing format drives in XP64 or will performance really suck from the alignment? I suppose it would be possible to break the SFF connector outside of the computer into an external case but would it have to be running when the computer boots?

Intervention - stop me buying a Gateway laptop

I was looking at it from the old paradigm that a large machine should have a powerful CPU and other components. Otherwise, why haul it around unless you are a kid? A ~15" machine is usually the most economical, weighs 506 lbs. and has decent performance and upgradability.

Holy moly, what websites need that bandwidth that you would notice the difference in a practical way? I'd think the latency would be more important most of the time.

    RAID JDOG

The backup is the same size as the data of course. For example for a 2TB drive there is another 2TB backing that up. The problem is that I have to replace both of those drives with 3TB drives (~$350) just to gain 1TB of usable capacity. Now if I want to add 2TB of capacity that would require...

I have the UD5. I'm not sure how different it is, but there are also only 10 SATA ports. I added a 4-port external card and an 8-port internal card. Now I'm running out of drive letters. Stupid Windows, could have used numbers or something.

Many of the recent external 2.5 inch drives have the USB integrated on the board, so it's not like you can accomplish much in the way of repair anyway.

Not very much if it is the 3-platter drive and also not very much if it is the 2-platter Samsung either. :) Mine are quite slow. The WD portable USB 3.0 1TB drives are just fine and one sale for $90 every week or two.

There are far stronger organic solvents that fuel oils. But metal is metal and mainly I'd be concerned about corrosion from strong acids or bases. Maybe we should send one of the drives to Cougtek and see how long it would take him to destroy it. :)
