I'd just like to throw in a thanks to Merc for this one...it made me look really good at a conference. When the powerpoint presentation's videos wern't being displayed on the projector ;)
I'm just curious what the other low-volume (ok, Tony too) system builders here are putting together and what they're charging. As my systems are oriented towards gaming and I hate building budget boxes, here's my current offerings:
Budget:
Antec Super Lanboy
Seasonic S12-330
Scythe SCNJ-1000...
Just going with the general theme of 939 boards; I'm really in love with the [urlhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128279]Gigabyte GA-K8NU-SLI[/url] nForce4 board. It has a better feature list for enthusiasts than any I've seen. I've now built 5 servers and 4 workstations...
The game is already gold. I can't say I'm having any issues running the latest omega driver for my X800. My game center has been chosen as one of 30 "Premier" game centers to feature this titile, so I'm quite stoked.
I can say that my skills with the helicopters are getting quite good.
I'm looking for a computer that will run in the living room and play XviD and MP3 files to the TV and stereo. Is XBoX still the way to go? I've noticed that my roommates older laptop stresses while playing the movies, so some CPU power is required. It won't be storing anything, so a large hard...
Good point on imaging directly to the writer. Considering the imare will NEVER be larger than 4GB, it makes a lot of sense. Screw the CF card and reader.
The demo came out about 24 hours ago...since then it's been #1 at the game center. Anyone else playing it? The graphics are incredible and I think they've done some nice things with the gameplay.
I'm very interested in this product, and in a CF-based IDE drive to store the backup image. My system already has 4GB of RAM, so a 4GB SSD and a 4GB CF sounds quite do-able. RAID-1 would only be viable if I could dedicate a significant amount of the system memory to caching writes to the CF...
In a P180 with both exhaust fans running at sufficient speed (Nexus @ 7v?) I can't see this beast NOT keeping any A64 cool. When I was first messing with this setup I upped the core voltage to 1.6 and got it up to 2.65Ghz on the first try. Even at this OC/OV a single 7v Nexus leaning against my...
Since I started using Firefox and Outlook 2003 I haven't had any issues of any sort. I do just for fun run housecall (which works fine for me in IE6 with SP2 after I trust the website) and it always comes up clean.
The Scythe Ninja (SCNJ-1000)...it's friggin' huge.
It's replacing a Scythe NCU-2005 (not a small HS on it's own) and is easily 25-33% larger. 11cm (4.4in) on a side and 15cm (6in) high; this thing weighs 665g (1.4 pounds!)
It dominates my new motherboard (Gigabyte K8N Ultra-9) and even...
I've had the opporunity to upgrade my system pretty much every month, running at least one sample of every core of A64 in the process (next up: San Diego).
The Venice I have is much better than the winchester cores I had before, and I think that the lowest clocked Venice is a 3000+. Keep in...
So I've been playing with my day-old newest rig and have discovered that the venice-core A64 underclocking like a mofo.
This example is a 3500+, whose maximum multiplier is 11 and FSB is 200Mhz (therefore 2.2Ghz CPU)
I've been playing with CrystalCPUID to see what the processor can do and have...
I really like the new version of housecall. It does a great job on spyware and adware as well as the normal virus. On top of that it's got all the stuff I like in a utility application.
a) No TSR
b) No install, runs directly from the source
c) free
can't really knock that.
I used a P160 for nearly a year until I modded it too much to stay in one piece. I'm currently waiting for the P180, and tried using a 2700-BQE in the meantime, but it's too noisy. I currently have all my components just sitting out on the workbench until the P180 arrives.
Re: quiet computing.
The best quiet HSF combo is a Scythe NCU-2005 with a Nexus 120mm controlled by either a Zalman Fanmate2 (cheap and manual) or a nCubed T-balancer (expensive and automatic).
This has been the configuration of my last 3 systems, all of which are "silent" at 1m distance.
Yeah, that pack of smokes is most interesting. Seriously though, I'm interested in removing the fan and ducting it to an exhaust fan in the case. It has significant quiet computing capability.
I'm building some smoothwall machines for a client way out in the boonies. The fastest connection we can get out there is ISDN. I'm using smoothwalls as they are easy to tie into our current VPN solution. However, it appears that the smoothwall only directly supports PCI ISDN cards (not external...

A client has a desktop and a laptop. He also has an exchange server in his office and 5-10 POP3 accounts. He wants to sync all the accounts with both machines seamlessly...help?
I can't reccomend any fanless PSUs because NONE of them are actually fanless. Seriously, every one of them will only run reliably if you have a case fan providing significant airflow nearby - therefore making the "fanless" claim a bit weak. I'm really liking my new Seasonic S12-430W, it's...
LCDs have a native resolution where the number of actual pixels is the same as the number of pixels trying to be represented. As CRTs don't have actual pixels, they represent all resolutions within their range equally. All LCDs I've used can operate in nearly any resolution by using different...
I just fired all my employees at the game center. Now there is just my manager and myself. I've put him on salary and have changed the hours so I only work 2 shifts a week with him taking the rest. Should be interesting.
$9.50 is the norm here, $10.50 is the going rate in SF. The price is still low enough to not be an issue for most viewers, I don't know why they didn't charge double fir the first week.
I can't blame them. They specifically state that the warranty is void if the drive is subjected to 300G+. I wouldn't be suprised if it was close to that considering the surface was granite.
I doubt good days outnumber bad in most people's lives. Fortunatly, it's part of human physiology for us to remember good times and forget unpleasant ones...otherwise we'd all be depressed all the time.
It's too warm here. I moved my workbench out to the deck so I could watch the sailboats while I worked, but now the patch of fluffy cloud that had provided shade has blown by, and now I'm subjected to the 73F (23C) temperature directly...I think I'll go get a hat.
:P
