    A little bit chilly

I just got back from a wedding in LA over the weekend. With the temp over a hundred and the humidity over 80%, I could feel the pollution sticking to my body. The one advantage of wearing the full tux with vest and tie was that it took nearly 5 minutes for the heat to penetrate fully and cause...

AMD to crap on customers, Q1 06

My complaints about the slot architecture are focused on the physical design rather than the cores they supported. Most notably the tendancy for the socket itself to pull clear of the motherboard. Though it would be interesting to see what heatpipe-based coolers could be devised around the slot...

    I/O plates piss me off

The problem with standards is that they have to be standard. That means being able to accomodate at least 90% of the boards out there. There's just too many "special needs" now that so many things are integrated onto the motherboard. Many of the funkier things are now using PCI slots and...

    I/O plates piss me off

The new boards I buy are Gigabyte nForce4 boards that have 6 audio plugs, 2 ethernet connectors, and 2 SPDIF connections. How are you going to fit that in a standard? I'm still hoping that someday soon the average board will ditch parallel, serial, and PS/2 connections. That would require...

I'm quite interested in your results as well. I don't have much experience with dynamic disks, but have always wondered how hard it would be to move them around and do maintenece/recovery stuff on them.

The circuit city where the impulse buy happened did not have anything but this card and a SB Live!. There's no way I would have ordered a sound card, I simply didn't think it would make that much difference with my current speakers (Klipsch 2.1) and my source (192kbps ABR MP3). It was on the...

NEWZ: Seagate Releases 120GB & 100GB 2½ Inch Notebook Dr

I recently recieved a 2.5" Samsung SATA drive from newegg as part of a larger order. It's 2005, why do things still not do WPA?

Making some good money? A very nice rant; and one I 100% agree with. It's not like linksys don't know how to do WPA; many of their products have it. The killer for me is why their range extenders don't support it. They have a "one touch setup" that would obviously not support keying in a code.

    Ban the power brick

I Think the laptop argument holds the most water. Reading a NT4 drive in XP?

I didn't stop to look at it, but it was the original drive in a 440BX-based P2-400/128MB NT system. 8GB in 2 partitions of 4GB. I just upgraded a user from NT4 to XP Pro. I took his old drive and installed it in a USB 2.0 enclosure so he can access his files. From what I can tell, there are 2 scenarios that should make DVI superior. 1) Long cable runs: To VGA's credit, on runs as long as 50' VGA still looks fine. 2) Higher res/refresh: This is only in theory, as VGA can support both higher res and refresh...wtf?

Just so you know, that SCA box and silent aren't compatible. The fan on the back is quite noisy and cannot be swapped or removed without the very loud alarm going off. Removing the alarm requires a soldering iron or surgical hammer. I'd suggest this:

    Plasma

I don't think you'll see plasmas with that kind of res. They're designed to replace televisions, remember, not monitors. That's a decent resolution for TV (I guess, I don't watch it). If you're looking for a better resolution, you're probably looking for Samsung's 24" 1920x1280 or their 57"...
