    Damning with faint praise?

It seems that is happening more and more these days. Perhaps he just needs a laptop, generator, and a satellite link? I can just imagine all the people of Ballarat setting off into the outback to find the witchdoctor and have to voodoo removed from their computers. ;)

    How to convey an idea

Nice post Tannin, lots of good stuff. The primary thing I got from it is that life is shades of grey as opposed to the black and white context that we had been babbling about, and that everything everyone does is at least a little darker than we'd like to think it is. I'm ok with that, but just...

Afraid not. I actually do teach here; class sizes are around 50 now. But I do it completely for free and for fun. I plan to keep it that way.

    Something Random

I just had a meeting where I seriously discussed selling my gaming center with an interested buyer. It's been 3 years, a lot of fun, and a good learning experience; but I need to stop trying to make things I enjoy into profitable businesses. As soon as I try to make money off something, I lose...

    Audio Equipment

I got all the speakers plugged in and jury-rigged a stretch of speaker wire into an SPDIF cable. The sound is quite good; easily as good as my last, less "boom-y" as Merc said, but the sharpness and clarity is easily comparable. I'm still doing some initial listening, but I suspect I'm picking...

    How to convey an idea

I'll back Chewy on both of the above comments. 1. Everyone has something that others find interesting; you just need to identify it and market it appropriatly to the right people. 2. Go to the bars with a gay friend. Female is better; going out with a gay guy and finding a subtle yet very clear...

    Office Chair

I go through high-back leather office chairs about every 3 years. The one I have now I bought from OfficeMax 3 years ago for about $100. It has no labelling on it, so I can't reccomend an exact model, but it's by far my favorite. I've been looking for a second identical one for my GF, but I may...

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

I'm looking specifically for a P&S that can make the most of low-light/fast motion/no flash shots from about 10 feet away. I was under the impression that the F30 was the one to get. Is it worth waiting for the F40?

Seagate announces 15K savvio 2.5" HDD

I'm not holding my breath for fast/affordable 36GB+ SSDs this year. This is one of those technologies that is taking forever to reach the mainstream market. I've been waiting for years.

Indeed. I joined not long after, but it was many months before I posted here regularly. I stuck around at SR for quite a while, then realized I wasn't hanging around at any forums, and felt that should change, so I popped in here.

    How to convey an idea

It's a tough one, and the reason it's a tough one is because the problem is bigger than it seems. People lie about stuff all the time (doubly so on dating sites), but certian things are OK to be "called out" on, or even to admit yourself later. This isn't. The problem isn't her weight, she has...

    KVM suggestions

Depending on your LCD, it may have a VGA and a DVI port on the back. If it does, you can switch between the sources with a button on the front. If you won't be switching much, this plus your USB switch would be the easiest/cheapest way to do it.

Antec forgot to renew their domain name.

It happened to hotmail.com at least once, and one of the apple domains as well. I must admit, it has happened to me (well, my clients) a few times. It's unfortunate and annoying, but hardly shameful.

    My new system

A 300W good power supply is good enough for most users. I'm sure it's more than I need. I'm running a 380W in my current system, and that is more than enough. Unless you are putting more than one video card or more than 4 hard drives, I can't imagine needing more than a 300W PS.

Definatly sounds like bad cards Merc. I have that same motherboard in the same case with a larger gaming card installed (X1800 IceQ). I switched to SATA cables with right-angle ends on them.

    Display callibration 101

Merc, I think with the combination of DVI and make/model profiles you can get pretty close. But sample variance in the backlight itself probably is responsible for a "significant" amount of shift. Not that I notice or particularly care.

Yay, my projector ceiling mount has arrived! Now I get to violate larger parts of my rental agreement. And it looks like I need a 15-20' VGA cable (my projector doesn't do DVI). Considering it runs at 1024x768, is image bluryness going to be an issue?

HD Keeps Spinning Down: How to ID?

Nope. The only people who do advanced replacement are the people that have lots of practice doing replacements: WD. Having never had a Samsung die; I am not familiar with their replacement process. WD, however, does have the best RMA process out there (except that they ship you WD drives).

    My new system

No super system is complete without at least a 1TB array AND a RAID-0 set, so include 4x500GB in a RAID-10, and 2x Raptor 150 in RAID-0. Plus a pair of DVD-RW (assuming no HD-DVD/Blu-Ray).

    The end of an era

Booting DOS (or Linux) from a CD (or USB thumbdrive) is nearly as easy and more tools can fit. And I certainly bet I can complete the aforementioned tasks faster than you if you first have to install the floppy drive ;)

My HDDs were around 40C for a while, and I changed from a SFF case to a P180 primarily to get their temps down.

    The end of an era

I've been building systems for money for about 10 years now (less than you guys, I know), and I can't remember EVER installing a floppy as standard. The last time I needed a floppy to install or run a piece of software was 1994! Of course, I do have a USB one sitting around.

Nope. You can even make it read-only. And there isn't much disk access at all after start-up. My only concerns were on mounting a USB disk as a hard drive in Linux. Or is this all BIOS controlled?

    Smoothwall Hardware

I'm building some more of these things; they were so successful and so popular. What do people here think of just using a USB stick as a HDD instead of a CF card in an IDE adapter? Think Smoothwall will have an issue? Anyone know if the BIOS will have a problem?
