    Linux Certifications?

I've been meaning to learn Linux for quite some time. In fact, I have started a number of times without success. I am of the firm belief that Linux proficiency will be a prerequisite for employment in my business somewhere down the road. Ideally, I'd like a certification of some kind as...

If you sell a computer without an OS, you know for sure that you will get less tech support calls. That might explain the $180 difference.

    Where to Buy?

In my experience, Newegg has been pretty good. Shipping same or next day with back ordered items and rebates quite clearly marked. But I only order from them about 3 times a month, and it's been almost a week now. Have they changed anything?

    Normally DeAd?

21% deceased isn't that high a percentage, really. Tony might back me up on this (or jump down my throat ;)) but this kind of thing has significant outliers (think asymmetrical bell curve). I'm much younger than you, and I would bet that it's already in the double digits percentage wise.

Install IE 7, not for browsing but for safety?

If I were to exploit machines, I would focus on people that are more lax about updates. Not only does this mean I could use an older exploit, but that the user would be less likely to notice. You also must consider that MS will EOL IE6 sometime soon, and then you will need IE7 to be patched at all.

    TV card suggestions

Unfortunatly, those are 2 things I can't have. There are no mountains between me and the antenna I'm after, but an internal antenna will be a must and there are a few buildings in the way.

    Normally DeAd?

Sol, I can't think that that is right. Placing so much significance on a single (the lowest) value could potentially really screw up the average. IIRC, one of the reasons for choosing Median instead of Mean or Mode was to prevent outliers from having a significant impact on the calculation.

Now all we need is a list of relevant ages. For Eric; we need to know the year of your birth, and how many of the people born that year are still alive. If it's less than half...count yourself lucky and double-check that I'm in your will. ;)

    Switching to IE 7

The talk of a licence expiring is from their beta period. If you got a beta licence to go with their beta software, it was designed to expire quite a while after the full version was released. Just go back and get a full licence (still free, and reverse compatible with your old VMs).

    64GB solid state hard drive

I-RAM can handle 4GB and costs $115. It uses 184-Pin DDR DIMMs that cost $78/GB Realistically, motherboards only have 4 PCI slots these days. 4x$115=$460 16*$78=$1248 So you can have a 16GB, very fast RAMDISK for just over $1708. Makes the others look like quite the bargain.

    Point to point wireless

Thanks. Do they support external antennas? Do they support bridging in firmware? To complicate things, the remote office needs (local) wifi. So I'll be bridging from the main office with a powerful directional antenna, then re-broadcasting locally with something else. Any suggestions?

I've got 0.3" on you, but I'm afraid that is the end of the road WRT 4:3 screens. I would love a 24" version with the same resolution, or a 30" version with 2048x1536.

    Network trouble

If you are lucky, there are just some additional services that are in non-standard condition on the laptop. If you are unlucky, his wireless router has some kind of internet-cafe type setting; where each machine can see out, but it prevents them from seeing each other. (My Linksys 802.11n has that)
