    Powering arrays seperatly in Windows?

OK. Yes, this programs works with the settings named above. It does still show the error message when pressing either button, it isn't saving it's settings, and I'm still nervous about powering down a mounted drive, but the rest is working perfectly. Thank you so much!

Additionally, does anyone have suggestions about what to do to be sure there is no activity to the drive when I power it down? 3Ware suggest removing the drive letter, but it would still be shared, no? How do you unmount a drive in Windows?

Yay! Have some error messages! Situation: launcher.exe copied to c:\Program Files (x86)\ Ran the app from that location Entered the following lines to the "Settings" Tab: C:\Program Files\AMCC\CLI\tw_cli.exe /c0 rescan /c0 commit Then I pressed the "Prepare to Stop Array" button and...

It doesn't max my cores on minimize, but it does consume about 12MB of memory. Not an issue (the desktop window manager alone is taking 260MB), and I have plenty, just letting you know in case that wasn't expected.

After my Russia trip, I will never again be carrying only one body to something important. I will have two bodies, likely one with the 10-22 and the other with the 75-300 as the default configuration, swapping primes and a midrange zoom into the one least likely to be useful for a situation.

You got it Handruin. I have the CLI installed at that location, but they won't give me the API. Your application ran fine, so no need to optimize for 64-bit-ness. Everything sounds great so far.

    Powering arrays seperatly in Windows?

Unfortunatly, I can't have the API. But the rescan looks to do exactly what I want, and the commit and flush commands are darn useful as well. It will probably be broken down into a "start" and "stop" sequence with a prompt "Please turn on the array" before a rescan and an "it is now safe to...

That would be in a public restroom? A 'stall' as I believe they are called? In that case, no. I have, however fallen asleep in the shower and split my head on the hot water knob before hitting the floor. Nothing better than waking up in a pool of blood ;)

Meh. One week every few years to add capacity, and the rest of the time I don't need to worry about distributing the data or explaining to the S.O. why the movies are on drive M except for the documentaries because they didn't fit...so they are on drive T with the TV shows... I will happily...

I don't know what the CPU cost would be for resizing files on the fly, but it is likely worthwhile to only cache the popular ones in every size. I keep my images as close to the 10MB/image limit as possible and currently have 590 images uploaded.

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

700k is plenty for Vonage. It matters more what else you are doing at the time. If you are gaming online or downloading stuff on Bittorrent, it really doesn't matter how much bandwidth you have. If you are just surfing around, it also doesn't matter how much bandwidth you have.

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

There is a governor on the modem, the question is whether it is set above what your cable supports or not.
  30. ddrueding

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

Very likely. I've heard they prosecute that stuff rather thoroughly. Plus, if the cabling sucks, I doubt the modem is capping anything.

For as long as I've been looking (about 30 minutes), Flickr has been averaging 6000+ pictures uploaded per minute. Taking the broad leap that this is an actual average, and a broader leap that the average filesize is about 4MB, that means that their download speed is at least 400MB/s...sweet.

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

The most fundamental difference between DSL and cable: Cable is one large pipe for you and all your neighbors, DSL is a smaller pipe just for you. Typically this doesn't matter because the local pipe is big enough and the ISP is oversold on bandwidth anyway. That doesn't seem to be the case...

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

If you haven't made changes to your system, you likely aren't the issue. As Blake and Bozo said, the biggest differences are the webservers and the ISP itself. The tech (DSL/Cable/whatever) makes very little difference for simple surfing. Even a $500/mo T-1 gives timeouts if the 'net in general...

Ideas for reducing PC power consumption

I used to run CrysatalCPUID to dynamically underclock/volt my system. I suspect you currently have your system underclocked/volted as far as it will go, but there is no reason not to have some extra horsepower for a few seconds when you need it ;)

I have an Intel DG31PR motherboard, 1.8Ghz single-core Celeron (35W max), and an Antec Earthwatts 380W PSU here that were purchased with the specific intent of being low power. Of course, I never ended up using them. Who knows what could be done with some underclocking...I may give it a shot...

Ideas for reducing PC power consumption

The fans would be good for 3-4 watts, not really worth the risk. The biggest improvement would be to replace all those drives with 1 or 2 drives, bonus points for using 2x500GB 2.5" in RAID-1 for data protection. That would save you a whole lot. Paying for itself? I don't think so.
