I didn't even know what telecentric meant before. When you say 100% telecentric, do you mean double telecentric? That was really a requirement?

    TWC RoadRunner Speed Boost?

IIRC, Powerboost is calculated from a running average. If your average used bandwidth for the last x seconds was less than your rated speed, you will get a boost up to y MB/sec until your average speed is the rated speed.

4G of RAM under Windows XP; boot.ini's "/3G" switch

I've never used the /3G switch, so I can't help. Any system I work on with more than about 3GB of RAM runs a 64-bit OS.

Even if it oscillates a few times, the video would still be fairly accurate. We don't see the far side, or the black hole itself, until pretty far into the video.

    More Vista nonsense

In order to load something into memory and execute it, the system needs to already be compromised. I considered those features to be semi-useless anyway. Sure, it allows rights escalation, but there have always been a hundred ways to do that on Windows.

    Throwing old hard drives

Can't do it. If I or my client are worried enough to physically destroy the drive instead of just formatting it, it will be destroyed by one of us in front of both of us.

Strike that. I tried it with a thumb drive, but it doesn't work with GPT disks.

Thanks for the suggestion Greg, but that heatsink design really won't work well for my configuration. Imagine a motherboard mounted to the wall with the USB/PS2/etc connectors on the top and the expansion cards aligned vertically. The airflow is all vertical; from well below the motherboard...

    How far do you go?

I know for my dad it was his target audience. He was writing payroll software, and companies started doing away with their mainframes in favor of workstations and servers. Proper support for an AS/400 server is stupidly expensive (queue fushigi).

    How far do you go?

My dad did something similar. He went from Xerox PARC to AS/400 to Win 3.11 programming. Now he is solidly in the MS camp, dual-booting Vista Ultimate and XP. He uses Outlook, Internet Explorer, and Windows Defender. After explaining that I refuse to support clients who behave like that, and...

    How far do you go?

Now we are talking extreme measures. If I get called back to the same box a second time, after the nuke and pave they get to purchase Acronis Trueimage and they get a bootable restore DVD with the image on it. For some true insanity, a few of the users kept restoring the image and then "getting...

    How far do you go?

I give it one pass through the registry and startup files and one reboot. Total time less than half an hour. If that doesn't do it, I start preparing them for a complete nuke and pave. If they insist on me trying to fix it (don't have installation media for apps, etc). I do it right there while...

    Pioneer Produces 500GB Blu-ray Disc

There will always be a market for shipping many copies of static data to lots of people cheaply. Granted, online delivery will replace many of the traditional uses, but there are many it won't. Thanks Mark. In my case...er...situation, the fans are farther away. There is plenty of air velocity, but it is more important for the fins to be farther apart so that the lower pressure air can still move through it.

    System Temperatures

It is cooler this morning, so all the temps are lower, but the discrepancy is significant. Speedfan 4.35b24 is reporting Core0 to be the hottest at 67C, while Real Temp 2.7 is reporting the same core to be 62C. The coolest (Core2) is at 57C and 52C respectively. Any ideas?

    nVidia may have "issues"

What I read said that the mobile parts were failing first because they thermally cycled more often and had less competent cooling solutions. That just means the desktop boards will take longer to fail. If it is long enough to exceed the average lifespan, than that is fine too.

Yeah, I'm not really happy about it. Right now the HSF is a Zalman 9700 with the fan removed, I think a Scythe Ninja would work better with the more general airflow I have in the case. Is there something better than the Scythe Ninja Plus for passive cooling?

OEM Vista Business Downgrade to XP What-tha?

Tannin reported the same result 8+ months ago on these forums. I wouldn't be surprised. Unless a key is used hundreds (thousands?) of times, I'm sure it won't go invalid on WGA. I have experienced a single key be used 110+ times without issue.
