    Way too much E-mail

I'm at a client dealing with the same problem right now. 6GB is the largest mailbox, and I'm targeting everyone over 1GB. PST is really the only way. If they don't want a second folder, you can have all the mail delivered to a single PST on their local machine. The downsides being that web...

    SAN alternative

When I've done fail-over, it has been the entire storage stack. 2 Fileservers with a bunch of SATA ports connected to a bunch of 1TB SATA disks. Then get redundancy further down the chain by using DFS or something else. Hardware redundancy (Fail-over RAID cards or power supplies) gets really...

    Beijing Olympics

Gymnastics isn't something I watched anyway. The pursuit of perfection is clearly not healthy for the participants. Watching children who have had their lives taken for years, and whose skill will be useless in less than four, is just sad. What happens to these kids? And what happens to the...

    End of TV :(

TV Torrents has a better engine for dealing with TV shows. They give each show their own page, that is managed by someone, and has a single torrent for each episode and each complete season. It also has an enforced ratio, so your bandwidth is better. If you donate (become a member) they will...

    The Nehalem Preview: Anandtech

Neat find. I don't think multi-core is efficient in a general performance/watt sort of way, and a single core is quick enough for what these will be asked to do.

    Intel SSD's in the works?

64GB is plenty for workstations. Even with a decent sized music collection. Typically if people need bigger than that, they need much bigger. Like no-way-an-SSD-will-work bigger.

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

For my purposes, I don't care about the weight or the battery life. It would constantly be plugged in at home, the office, or my car. Being able to do some serious post-processing on the road would be awesome. It would help me avoid issues like this.

    End of TV :(

I sit about 24" away from my 42". I use it as a computer monitor, so the whole thing doesn't need to be in view at the same time. I treat it as multiple monitors, with different windows tiled across the space. If I could have a wall of desktop at 3840x2160 I would take it.

    End of TV :(

2,560 x 1,440? Sweet. That would be a great upgrade to my monitor. To keep near the same pixel pitch I'll need to go to about 56", though. That might not fit on my desk.

Olga really likes Heroes, I have BSG but haven't watched it yet. The others I haven't checked out. 99% of my TV time is us watching together, and I don't think SciFi will pan out that well with her.

    It's HOT

This computer is getting fairly insane. I wish I could do something useful with all this heat (400W idle, 700W+ load). It never gets cold enough to need it, and when it is hot I wish I could just duct it outside. Wherever I build, it will have the option to intake/exhaust from/to outside.

IIRC, it is the same as the OEM version. That means that it is tied to one motherboard. You can't move the license to another board/machine. They may also make you buy it with hardware, a pencil sharpener or SATA cable is enough.

None of your tasks or network are in any way complex. I would put Windows XP MCE on the server (for your XBox goodness) and leave XP on the rest. Those fundamentals are fine and will do all you need to do. Changing them will just make fixing your issues more complex. Now, about fixing your...

File Area Networking (FAN) - Data storage solutions
