    Powering arrays seperatly in Windows?

Thanks for the offer Handruin, I will likely take you up on it when I hear back from them. Their customer service is excellent (as you would expect from a company that makes Enterprise-grade gear), so it shouldn't be long.

    SATA Ports

Newer external drives are using eSATA instead of USB or Firewire. Seems the native interface is faster. If it was a standard SATA plug, I would hope there is a power adapter to go with it, that would be useful when doing data recovery.

    Rigging power supplies together?

Well, certifiable at least. ;) EE was actually what I did before computers. I had a full-time job designing/prototyping control circuits for RS-232 interfaces in high school (that was 10+ years ago...holy crap).

    Powering arrays seperatly in Windows?

Good points both. And I'm not sure how I can unmount a drive in Windows. In order to get the drive to detect after power-up, I need to: Go to https://localhost:88/ Log in as administrator Go to the Management Tab and Maintenance Sub-Tab Press the Rescan Controller button The easy way for now...

MAC and PC common storage help

All the electricity is consumes is released as heat, so mainly it is an indicator of how much energy it is consuming. Can't say whether it is doing anything useful with that energy. I have modded WRT54Gs with fans after overclocking them and turning up the transmit power ;)

    Looking for power bricks

I have a box of bricks that I match up to stuff as needed. The 3 bits of information that need to match are: Output Voltage Minimum Wattage (having an over-powered brick is fine) Plug Type/Size I find Radio Shack's iGo series useful most of the time.

    Powering arrays seperatly in Windows?

Thanks to the help of many of you, I now have the data array on my system being powered by a separate PSU. This got me thinking. I only need the array to be available when I am watching movies or listening to music (15% of the time?). So I'm playing with the idea of powering up/down the array as...

    Rigging power supplies together?

For the record, all I did was short the green wire to a ground on an Antec Earthwatts 500W and it is now controlled by input power (always on). It took the load of a dozen drives and is doing a great job. I'll be putting together a new related thread soon. Thanks for all the advice!

    Restoring System

As a system reseller, you can still get OEM copies (I think). But a friend has been doing it a cheaper way. 1. Get a pirated version from online. 2. Download and install all updates until WGA breaks it. 3. "Go legit" by paying the amount Microsoft want to make it legal (which is less than an...

Games perform poorly with dual core AMD?

I know a number of people who have worked at different game companies, most notably one whose initials are EA. VoIP woes: Troubleshooting?

That is the impression those sources left me with as well. That the unregulated incoming connection and the large number of open connections (common with BT users - correctable in some firmwares) can mess things up regardless.

    It's HOT

Based on where I'm looking and the basic design, solar or wind would be enough; I'm planning to have both. The primary concern is sizing the battery bank. Water gathering/storage/filtration is another issue. And the one I know how to deal with but don't want to is septic.

    More Vista nonsense

Seconded. I could understand that a standard disk needs a certain access pattern to optimize it's cache, but an SSDs primary advantage is the near-zero access time to anything on the disk! This means that no optimization should be necessary!

I would go with option #3. Sharing on the network should be really easy and it gives you access to the data from both machines at the same time. Is one a desktop? If so I would share it from there. What is the OS of any desktop machine (or least mobile laptop) you have?
