Too fast for what? Is it unstable? I assume the image migration worked with the new board?

    AVG8 = Crap!!!

Decent but free implies open source. Open source users usually use Linux. Hence no AV. Also, I suspect that there is actually quite a bit of daily updating and even a solid amount of innovation and research that goes into keeping an antivirus program effective. I'm now making the case to my...

    Firewall question

I think even the ones built-in to XP SP2/3 and Vista can do this. Just go to the "exceptions" tab and uncheck everything. Now add back the IPs/Ports that you want.

End of the World As We Know It

The discussion that I'm hearing is whether it is better for the economy as a whole to have them collapse or to have an extra $12,000,000,000,000 in national debt. That would more than double it.

    Firewall question

There is some clarification needed. Stereodude is correct, that Linksys (and the one built-in to Windows) block all incoming traffic unless otherwise specified OR unless the request originated at that machine. Do you want requests that a computer on the inside made to get through?

    World's Worst Software

When my computer is back up, I'll have to post a video of Photoshop opening to show how painless it can be (even with extra plug-ins). You just need a system that draws 400W+ at idle and costs as much as a 1Ds MkIII and a 400/2.8 combined.

Tempting. And I'm also tempted just to send down small photo albums from time to time. But I would like to get her more involved with the family, and she is the only one not on-line. The parents are in Europe, and sending updates via e-mail and Flickr daily, I'm calling grandma and passing on...

Intel board won't POST with RAID card?

That was my thought as well, but I didn't find anything (other than telling the OS to use onboard video). Regardless, I've moved on to other things now, and won't have an opportunity to revisit this issue. Thanks for the follow-up.

New mobo is in, I forgot how much that board cost ($300)! And the bad news is that it didn't last long enough for there to be anything better, so the replacement isn't an upgrade (only getting PCI-E 2.0)

Of course, to make this productive and useful, we should include why the program is bad, and what alternatives are available. Then we might be able to compile a document of some kind.

    World's Worst Software

It sounds like a piece of crap, but it doesn't affect the rest of the system, and because of that it is clear which software is at fault. World's Worst Software

Might as well start a list. Requirements: 1. Must be very common (lots of people effected) 2. Must be bad at what it was designed to do (AV that doesn't, etc) 3. Must be misunderstood (users should have the impression that it's good) 4. Must effect the computers general operation (running at...

Nope. The wood doesn't conduct, and as long as the screws had a bit of space, they didn't warp the board. Worked great through 3 motherboard changes, but I got sloppy this time.

    Something Random

Looks like I managed to screw my motherboard (literally). It is surface-mounted to plywood with wood screws, and I think I put one in crooked. Now the board will only get to POST code 25 and halts, no matter what other components are involved. Bah.

    Seagate Announcements

Well, the rig I have now is starting to fill up. Total drive count for the single machine is: 12x 750GB, 2x 74GB, 3x 16GB. My RAID controller is only a 16-port, but the motherboard has another 6 SATA and 1 PATA if I need it. I might need to upgrade from a 700W PS soon....we'll see.

I'm planning on buying one for my grandmother. She doesn't have a computer, but I would like to mail her SD cards and have her put them in. The less features beyond that the better. I'm not sure what size to get, either. Somewhere between 8-15", ideally less than $500. Thoughts?
