Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

what is your 1-sentence though on awd e_dawg? (e.g. rwd "is only necessary on a racetrack")

Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

cool, tks for the info e_dawg i did read about some owners using low-octane fuel occasionally, but it didn't seem like it was worth the risk (or the 10% performance hit on the vr6 on a dyno). what year is your jetta? regret the purchase at all? if i was to buy one it would be a loaded gli.

Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

i was just looking at jetta vr6 vs bmw 325/330xi and i found all sorts of clear declarations about the use of premium gas on the vw. is this the case w/most modern cars w/nice engines? :(

ATI Charging Some For MMC 8.1 Update

mmc is a really bad name. i don't actively use any ati cards, and i know 'mmc' to be 'microsoft management console'

HLStats security.. What precautions should I take?

for future reference, the behavior you're talking about is called a CHROOT "-A --chrooteveryone"

HLStats security.. What precautions should I take?

proftpd is cheese. one of the worst.

HLStats security.. What precautions should I take?

ftpds are a gigantic source of exploits. make sure you're using vsftpd or pure-ftpd. if you want people to be able to connect to you using pasv (typical) mode, you'll need to tell your ftpd to use a fixed port range for it and open those ports on your firewall.
  9. H

HLStats security.. What precautions should I take?

you're entrusting your security to the scripts you're running. php and perl themselves are fine. opening port 21 is only going to allow active ftp, not passive ftp. most of the world is configured to use passive by default. what is the ftpd for? is it really necessary? consider using...

    Best Power Supply From . . . ?

pcp&c seems to have rabid fans that date back to the days when pc magazine actually meant something to people. they bought something, it worked, and they've been rabid ever since. i don't get it really :(

    JRE 1.4.1_02 released.

we only support java 1.3.1 through our api as well because of bugs

    JRE 1.4.1_02 released.

the java 'write once, run everywhere' propaganda is bs there are innumerable, crucial parts of the language that are os-specific. you'll notice most actual java APPLICATIONS have multiple versions for different oses. that's why. it goes about as far as 'hello world' in terms of flying...

    JRE 1.4.1_02 released.

i think it actually can be as simple as 'it sucks' if two cars cost 30 grand and look the same but one is faster and has better resale value, you can certainly argue that the first one isn't useless - it does get you from point a to point b. in light of the competition, however, it still...

    JRE 1.4.1_02 released.

i guess i should make a note not to make a dissenting opinion about anything on this board unless it's a popular-to-rip-on tech company like ecs or microsoft. really, debating against debate? wtf?
  21. H

    JRE 1.4.1_02 released.

my company's clustering software runs on win32, freebsd, and linux and all shares the same c++ codebase. 99% of it is platform independent, and the stuff that isn't is just very light. service vs daemon was the 'biggest' thing.

What is a good Basic Video Card

that's a good point to make too. i think any modern nvidia or ati solution will be better than whatever they're already running in terms of speed/image quality (unless they're using matrox and don't care about speed).
  27. H

What is a good Basic Video Card

it may also be observed that 3-year old tomatoes taste worse than new tomatoes :( i don't get these comparisons, guys. geforce2/3 are ANCIENT. if you want an image quality reference, use a geforce4.

Any decent priced NAS units for home users?

fans die, psu burns up usually. i'd estimate 80% of them have failed over the course of a year. the cpu fans aren't much better.

Any decent priced NAS units for home users?

sv24/sv25 are noisy and have terrible, terrible psus that fail as sure as the sun rises. trust me. i own 16 of them.

    I'm redesigning my home network.

is your imap server going to be accessible via the internet, or just webmail? if the imap can't be seen on the open net, feel free to use GETHACKEDIMAPD or whatever, because it doesn't matter as long as people can't get to it. imap-uw is literally a one-liner setup (if that, depending on...

imap-uw is the easiest. enjoy getting hacked.
  36. H

    I'm redesigning my home network.

if you're that worried about it, the best configuration would probably be to have an internal imap server and a dedicated webmail server. firewall the webmail server so that its only traffic allowed to the lan is to the imap port of the imap server. webmail is just web presentation of email -...

    I'm redesigning my home network.

let's begin this simply: why do you need a dmz?
  38. H

    I'm redesigning my home network.

you can accomplish all that by running it on the appropriate interface and using a packet filter
  39. H

    I'm redesigning my home network.

i would do it all on one box because i don't see the need for a dmz. just force ipsec on all your wireless traffic.

    Dual Port Server NIC

ha! i have 2 (out of 2) epias with 'failed ethernet' here too. here's a tip: take it out of the 2677 case, and it will work. it's the case's dc psu that causes it :( yes i used them with freebsd. to wit, compaq's (intel-based) dual adapters weren't too expensive, and they can have a module...

Any decent priced NAS units for home users?

it's a slim (laptop) cdrom only
  43. H

    I'm redesigning my home network.

macs can be spoofed so it's more of a 'deterrent'. packet sniffing can be done without an ip address, only an ip stack. you set the nic to promiscuous mode (where it actually 'listens' to everything it sees, even stuff not directed to it) and you can dump out from it. for more extremely...

  46. H
