help me decide which case to get

fwiw, i own an older version of that case. the black ones are spraypainted or something, and it comes off on your hand. the overall design is not very good. my via board's ethernet wouldn't function when it was plugged into that case/psu, but works fine in an antec powerplus case. my 0.02 if...

zx: openbsd can be bypassed with a boot disk or cd. so can linux. so can freebsd. so can solaris. this is not even a security issue, much less a platform-specific one. please wait for some iis exploit to pop out so you can all jump on the hood of your kias making thinly-veiled allegations...

    A computer-ethical dilemna

afaik, that kind of tax behavior has never been the case for non-affluent (e.g. 200k+) people
  21. H

    A computer-ethical dilemna

    bracket? you're taxed in ranges, for (wrong) example: 10-20,000 = 5% 20-30,000 = 10% 30-40,000 = 15% etc so if you made 20k, you get taxed 5% if you made 25k, you get taxed 5% of 20k, then 10% of 5k

    A computer-ethical dilemna

i run into these kinds of situations fairly often. if i'm actually forced to sit around and stare at the walls someplace, i'll bill more for it, but not my full rate. i usually bring a game boy or something to do if i know it's going to happen. if i'm doing remote stuff (like fixing an...

Buying an entry level Sun machine. Advice please.

it is completely supported for solaris9, but it remains to be seen how much longer the sun4m platform will be officially supported. that being said, you will still get tons of value out of the system on non-solaris operating systems for years and years to come. most solaris shops are running...

Buying an entry level Sun machine. Advice please.

i'd recommend a sparcstation 20 with a single sm81 cpu, 128mb of ram, an 8bm vsimm to enable the onboard video, cdrom drive, type 6 keyboard/mouse, a 4.5 or 9.1g 10k sca scsi drive, and a sun trinitron 17" monitor you can get this extremely cheap, and it will run solaris 9 (as well as openbsd...

    FreeBSD from scratch

eh... i think this isn't terribly necessary because of the source-based, strippable nature of freebsd. if you need it smaller, you can easily make it smaller. i would just install something into a chroot on an existing system and make a script to nuke everything but the files i wanted. fwiw...

Hardware innovations you'd like to see become mainstream

the palo-alto 810 workstation/server enclosure has outward-pointing drives, and cabling them can be a bitch when you have more than 4 disks. just an observation. i would like to see a single-plug standard for common motherboard headers (led, speaker, etc) as well as usb/usb2.

Looking for Powerful & (Hopefully) Quiet Northbridge Coo

be careful! in typical situations you want equal air coming in the front bottom and out the rear back. throwing side fans into the equation can slightly improve localized problems, but screw your overall cooling/airflow.

i would email the guy that runs heatsinkfactory.com - he'll give you a quick, objective opinion and sell the stuff to you at a good price :) i've bought misc cpu/case fans there, and he's always come through with good parts when i would ask about video/bridge/etc fans

just modify the boot method you're using (floppy or cd image) to use it... you can use vn devices in any other fbsd/obsd box to mount the boot images and modify them http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq7.html#SerCon
