for lmhosts you'll want to do something like this: 1.1.1.1 dc #PRE #DOM:domain the pre is important because otherwise it will try to resolve via dns first. after you make the edit, go to your network config in the wins section and import the lmhosts.sam file...

perhaps you have a "." (root) zone in your dns server? an easy way to figure out if this is a name resolution issue would be to use the lmhosts.sam file and its #DOM option

i'm trying to come up with some fair analogy but words fail me suffice it to say, it's my opinion that if you start with freebsd you will be able to rapidly adapt to any unix os - the same cannot be said for linux, as it has entirely too many 'linuxisms' (beyond the scope of package management).

the tivo hardware warranty is only 3 months, and the installation is done via a bootable cdrom. the worst case scenario with the software install is that it takes you a while to get done.
