Merging Computers Part II: the media center

uhhhhhhh you can put 2 120gb drives in a tivo easily. my roommate got a 14hr tivo for beans, bough a lifetime subscription, and put 2 80gb drives in it a year or two ago - that was my inspiration to buy one when i moved somewhere else. i have an upgraded tivo series2.

    yes

    Digital cameras

no, not even tiff. 'raw' format (supported on mid-to-high digital cameras) is the camera's image output in *RAW* format - not tiff, not jpg, not gif, not png, etc. even a conversion to tiff requires a conversion (even with no compression). the most purist of purists don't like to rely on the...

    Dell 2000FP 20" LCD Monitor for $759 + tax

i have one, 1600x1200 is a perfect resolution for it. i use 1280x1024 on 22" crts, if that offers any insight to my perspective. anybody with the $ should buy this immediately. cadalyst labs gave it top honors as well, look it up.

    Outlook Alternatives

virtually everything needs constant security/stability updates. mozilla has had 2 notable security issues in the last few months. openbsd has 5 pieces of errata for their latest release, 2 of which were from their own stuff. just because something isn't microsoft doesn't mean it's safe.

webmail sounds like a good idea as well as far as updating, you guys are high. - mozilla.com doesn't exist (which he would no doubt go to) - even if he did locate the download page, he would be utterly confused by it (what is win32? what is talkback? etc)
  21. H

    Outlook Alternatives

ie/oe updates with windowsupdate. mozilla doesn't. for this reason alone, i would recommend outlook express over mozilla for less-than-power users.

    "Fleet computer challenge"

i guess you're speaking from the frame of reference of dell, since you make the decisions? :( palo alto is not cheap, most of their cases are metal, and they're not the ones that do the manufacturing - it's outsourced to flextronics mostly. this is simply not the case in the dimension cases...

    "Fleet computer challenge"

by your own admission, dell is charging in excess of what you charge to provide lesser goods/services. that would mean they have a higher margin than you, so they're profiting more. couple that with the MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of customers they have, and it makes selling below cost to several...

  43. H

    "Fleet computer challenge"

ok? beat that price, please, or ignore the quote a second time. informing me to 'get back in touch with the real world' isn't exactly a pat on the back either, buddy. disclaiming yourself from overbearing pride by claiming that 'any' shop can do it is a fallacy. it doesn't exempt you from...
