Competing with Dell and other Indian companies

That's true, but I'm not sure how much you can learn about computers from recycling them. I would feel different about it if it was computer training. Steve

    Mandrake 9.0 Released Today

The Jojo, Yes, I have broadband, and Sunet usually has very good speeds from here. I got the first CD averaging about 2.5Mbits/s, and the second CD averaging about 1.5Mbits/s. My cable connection tops out at about 4-5Mbits/s, so that's not bad considering how busy it was. Clocker, It's in...

    Mandrake 9.0 Released Today

I installed it, and so far I'm very impressed. I chose the recommended install, and the entire process took about 25 minutes. The best part is everything just work out of the box. Samba worked with no trouble, and I was able to print to my other PC right away. It even had drivers for my scanner...

    Doom 3: Beautiful

It does look nice! Considering that Carmack wants the game engine to be used for the next 5 years, it better be. It'll probably force a lot of people to upgrade video cards though, including myself. Steve

It was formerly Redmond Linux. I think it's Lindows that's based on Corel Linux. It's hard to keep track of all of them, especially with the name changes. Steve

For some reason, they keep it hidden. Here is the list of mirrors. It's still in beta, and they seem to have a new version every couple of weeks, so I haven't gone throught the trouble of trying it yet. Steve

    Why do inkjet heads clog?

A long period would be a few weeks. The Photo 780 is a 4 picoliter printer, which may explain the difference in the frequency of cleaning. Steve

    Why do inkjet heads clog?

For the latest Epsons, I think you can still use the generic inks, but you can't refill the Epson cartridges. They have a sensor to tell when the ink level increases, and they won't print. I have the Stylus Photo 780, and I normally use the genuine ink cartridges because I haven't had very good...

    Unreal Touranament 2003

You're right about going gold in the computer industry. In music, a gold record in the U.S. is for selling 500,000 copies, and a platinum record is for 1,000,000 copies. The level a record has to reach to become gold or platinum varies by country. Steve

    Need Help Re-encoding a file

I'm almost positive that'll work with 6.4. VirtualDub is such an invaluable program, and I can't live without it. I use it for almost all of my encodings. Steve

    Unreal Touranament 2003

Doug, For capture the flag, I think you have to set the minimum amount of players to 4. I was just on there, and it was just me and 2 bots because the minimum is currently 3. That way you won't get unbalanced teams. I probably be on there later tonight if anyone else is going to be. Steve

    Need Help Re-encoding a file

I don't know what codec it is either, but a quick check with VirtualDub shows that you can re-encode it with any codec you have on your system. Is there a specific one you wanted to use? Steve

    What's a good photo printer?

Personally, I think you can't go wrong with either a Canon or Epson printer from their Photo lines. The Canons have really improved in the last year or so to the point where I would put them about even with the Epsons in quality. They're also quieter and significantly faster than the Epsons...

    Prescription Privileges for Psychologists

No, PR has its own Consitution which, of course, is largely based on the U.S. Constitution. If you're interested, you can read the full text of it here. All Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens and they elect 1 U.S. Representative, but he(she) doesn't get a vote in Congress. Also, there's no...

Mr. None Above is very good man. He never makes promises he doesn't keep, and never takes campaign donations. Write in vote for Mr. None Above. Seriously, the last election for statehood was non-binding, and the vote was more a referendum against the Governor than anything else. The choices...

    Western Digital - Warranty Change?

I was afraid this would happen and I only hope other companies don't follow them. I'm interested in knowing if anyone here would still consider buying a drive with a 3 year warranty from either Maxtor or WD while they still have the 1 year warranty policy for other drives. Steve

Very interesting 911 TV ratings figures

Preliminary ratings in the U.S. show viewership was slightly down. I watched the ceremony at Ground Zero in the morning and when the President arrived in the afternoon. At night, I watched the Mets game. I made the mistake of watching CBS' "9/11" documentary when it originally aired 6 months...

Noise while playing a DVD Video

Try muting the line-in and mic-in on your sound card and see it that does anything. It could also be interference from some of the other wires. You could try unplugging most of them, leaving just the speakers and see if the static is still there. Steve

    Cultural moments

Now that is something I definitely remember. I had tickets to Game 4 of the NLCS, but my mom wouldn't let me go because I was sick (I was 9 at the time). As for the infamous Game 6 of the World Series, I thought for sure the Mets had lost. Then, a couple of hits, a wild pitch, and of course the...

Would you like fries with that order, sir?

All of the redesigned bills have the wire in them. It's in a different spot for each denomination. For example, hold up a twenty to the light, with the front facing you. You'll see the wire going down the left side in between the 2 and the 0 of the bill. Steve

    Cultural moments

I was too young to remember Reagan/the Pope being shot. For the challenger disaster, I found out in class just after the lunch break. Would you like fries with that order, sir?

The original $2 bills were only made in 1976, AFAIK. However, they're worthless as a collector's item, since everyone horded them when they came out. I think they did reintroduce it in the mid-90s, but in very limited quantities. The latest attempt at making a dollar coin has failed after...

    .NET

My answer was in response to Buck's question about the difference between the *SRPMS* and *i386* discs, so I didn't include the other discs. Discs 2 & 3 hold the additional programs which, depending on what you install, you will likely need. An SMP kernel is included on the first disc. Steve

The coming end of Moore's law due to power dissipation

Intel discussed this at the Fall IDF today. Apparently they are looking at making the CPU running at two different voltages, with less critical transistors running at a lower voltage while operating at the same frequency. There a short bit on it at Anand's. They also demonstrated a processor...

I don't know about injuries, but I'm fairly certain there weren't any deaths from his building. My dad was in charge of making sure everyone from their office was okay and reporting back to their home office, but his company only had one floor of a 50+ story building, so there were a lot of...
