    KVM suggestions

Depending on your LCD, it may have a VGA and a DVI port on the back. If it does, you can switch between the sources with a button on the front. If you won't be switching much, this plus your USB switch would be the easiest/cheapest way to do it.

Well, now that my priorities have been reassigned, I've just ordered one of these. I hope all will be well. Any comments on how the quality of the sound will compare to my dear Klipsch 2.1?

If you don't need NAS support, they also have a 2x750GB model that supports RAID-1 and JBOD internally.

I'm waiting for the next capacity of Buffalo Terastation. Right now they have 2TB (4x 500GB), and 3TB would be enough for a (very portable) backup of my main array.

I don't see much point, the price difference just isn't big enough to justify another product.

Antec forgot to renew their domain name.

It happened to hotmail.com at least once, and one of the apple domains as well. I must admit, it has happened to me (well, my clients) a few times. It's unfortunate and annoying, but hardly shameful.

    My new system

A 300W good power supply is good enough for most users. I'm sure it's more than I need. I'm running a 380W in my current system, and that is more than enough. Unless you are putting more than one video card or more than 4 hard drives, I can't imagine needing more than a 300W PS.

Definatly sounds like bad cards Merc. I have that same motherboard in the same case with a larger gaming card installed (X1800 IceQ). I switched to SATA cables with right-angle ends on them.

    Display callibration 101

Merc, I think with the combination of DVI and make/model profiles you can get pretty close. But sample variance in the backlight itself probably is responsible for a "significant" amount of shift. Not that I notice or particularly care.

The pessimistic suggestion would be to assure that their util finds something before returning the drive.

Yay, my projector ceiling mount has arrived! Now I get to violate larger parts of my rental agreement. And it looks like I need a 15-20' VGA cable (my projector doesn't do DVI). Considering it runs at 1024x768, is image bluryness going to be an issue?

HD Keeps Spinning Down: How to ID?

Nope. The only people who do advanced replacement are the people that have lots of practice doing replacements: WD. Having never had a Samsung die; I am not familiar with their replacement process. WD, however, does have the best RMA process out there (except that they ship you WD drives).

c'mon, it's a RAID-0 array of WD drives...that should be enough for spontaneous combustion...

Merc, Can you specify what program you use to do the deployment from USB and what you had to do to make he USB drive bootable?

    My new system

No super system is complete without at least a 1TB array AND a RAID-0 set, so include 4x500GB in a RAID-10, and 2x Raptor 150 in RAID-0. Plus a pair of DVD-RW (assuming no HD-DVD/Blu-Ray).

Sounds like you already found a use for a P190. I'm quite envious of that build; I like doing the tricky stuff.

    The end of an era

Booting DOS (or Linux) from a CD (or USB thumbdrive) is nearly as easy and more tools can fit. And I certainly bet I can complete the aforementioned tasks faster than you if you first have to install the floppy drive ;)

HD Keeps Spinning Down: How to ID?

My HDDs were around 40C for a while, and I changed from a SFF case to a P180 primarily to get their temps down.

    The end of an era

I've been building systems for money for about 10 years now (less than you guys, I know), and I can't remember EVER installing a floppy as standard. The last time I needed a floppy to install or run a piece of software was 1994! Of course, I do have a USB one sitting around.

    Antec's 2007 Product Lineup

I've built about 10 systems using P180s. I haven't needed a cable extension yet. I've used Antec and Seasonic power supplies and all Gigabyte motherboards.

    Smoothwall Hardware

Nope. You can even make it read-only. And there isn't much disk access at all after start-up. My only concerns were on mounting a USB disk as a hard drive in Linux. Or is this all BIOS controlled?
  31. ddrueding

    Smoothwall Hardware

I'm building some more of these things; they were so successful and so popular. What do people here think of just using a USB stick as a HDD instead of a CF card in an IDE adapter? Think Smoothwall will have an issue? Anyone know if the BIOS will have a problem?

Thanks. I was having major audio sync issues when using ripit4me and AutoGK. Just DVDDecryptor was working fine, but something in the change broke it. Nero Recode knocked out a file that works just fine.

That is the cheapest soltion to the immediate problem, but not the coolest or most flexible. Based on the existing system spec (looks great, BTW) the cost is not particularly relevant. Let me know what you end up getting, looks very cool. What HDDs are you using in that array?

I would assume that the partucular VLK he has won't pass genuine BS. When you buy a licence through the genuine advantage link, all they do is send you a program that changes the key and a new key. Hitachi 1 TB drive

I'll wait for the Seagate 4-platter design, TYVM. But yes, 1TB drives should be bought on principle. They are way cooler than even 950GB drives ;) Although my estimation of Hitachi is going up substantially, their model HV-250R is particularly nice.

    Interesting water cooling setup

Looks brilliant to me, and a professional looking installation as well. Considering how much energy we put into heating some things and cooling others, it's a nice thought to just be moving around the same heat instead.
