Indeed. The only people I know who like Islay Malts are those who smoke heavily. Considering my favorite alcohol is Vodka (pretty much the other end of the spectrum) with the heaviest thing I enjoy being Tequila, going to the heaviest of the heavies (Islay Malts) seems unnecessarily cruel.

I think it is significantly paranoid. A) The *nix-based appliances are really secure, particularly as they receive regular updates. B) The guest has very little chance of seeing the host. C) As soon as your firewall is gone there are plenty of avenues to attack a windows box anyway.

I've run 3TB drives on USB without issue, though not those exact drives. I have yet to hear of any RAID controllers that correctly identify and work with 3TB drives of any kind. I would be very cautious in that aspect.

Certainly a great price. 3TB drives do still have issues with some controllers, and all RAID controllers. IIRC, you don't use RAID, and you use newer Intel chipset boards, so you should be fine.

A good friend just turned 56 (not elderly), but due to some medical issues, decided not to renew his license. My grandmother is 90 (certainly elderly) gave up her license 5 years ago after an accident happened in front of us that she wouldn't have been able to avoid.

Ubiquiti makes awesome hardware at very competitive prices. I use their stuff for all of my WAN links. The main frustration is the high rate at which they release new products and the poor availability.

Yeah, I don't have a server, either. I would probably run it on my wife's machine, as I consider that "mission critical" when it comes to up time, maintenance, and general reliability.

I've used Smoothwall in the past with great success. I'm actually considering running a smoothwall in a VM on another machine, with a pair of NICs dedicated to the VM. Not sure how well that would work, but it would eliminate the hardware complexities/expense.
