    Tape Backup Solutions

So from either Dell or HP, new, I'm looking at ~$6k for the library, tapes, software, and interface. What would your confidence be in the used market?

    problem Computer Rebuild

It would speed up a 3TB drive some, but it would be much more effective if it could cache an entire RAID array. That would be worth something.

Thanks. I have some experience with Backup Exec and understand the sigh. If you had the choice, who would you use for hardware and software?

    Tape Backup Solutions

So Mercutio has got me thinking about tape backup systems. The total amount to backup is ~15TB. What systems (hardware and software) should I be looking at? I already have a backup on drives, so all I would need to do is copy that directly to tape. No special DB, VM, or Exchange clients to deal...

    Presenting "The Coffin"

Honestly, I've never had to set up a tape system before, and I seem to be fundamentally opposed more than is reasonable. For work I need to restore something from the backup at least daily (did I say my users were smart?), so I figured tape wouldn't be that great there. For the house? It might...

RDP file transfers can't be trusted

For my RDP needs, I map a drive directly to both sides of the connection, and do the file transfer that way. Still no major protections against corruption, but much faster.

    Presenting "The Coffin"

That is the idea that I'm currently playing with. Last winter these components were basically the only heater running in the house. In addition to a vent going up through the ceiling to a routeable baffle of some kind, I'm considering drawing the air from under the house as an option; it is...

    Media Player Appliances

But this is a fundamental problem on it's own. IIRC, dedicated hardware decoders are way more efficient (cost and energy consumption) than a general purpose CPU is for the same task. If that is the case then we do need to settle on some codecs just so we can get the high efficiency decoding...

Now presenting a work still very much in progress: Coffin 2.0! Ok, so basically it's just a 47U 19" rack with all my stuff in it, but the Douglas Fir wasn't big enough, and this is more flexible anyway. It will be integrated into some floor to ceiling Maple cabinetry built around the home...

Most of my current users, if I give them a URL, hit the home button to get to Google, and type the URL in there, then follow the first result whatever it is. This doesn't work very well for new or unusual destinations.

What I ran into was that if there was anything in the PCIe slot, the motherboard disabled the onboard graphics. The system would still boot headless, and the slot would work for the RAID card I stuck in it, but the perfectly good onboard video couldn't be turned on. I blame ASUS and their...

    MBR rootkit

Map XP to Windows 7 share

There are a bunch of things that I do to make this work. The easiest is to turn off password protected sharing on the Windows 7 box by pressing the start button and typing "sharing". Choose "Advanced Sharing Settings" from the list, scroll down, and turn it off. If that doesn't work, let me know.

    Scripting help?

My dad happens to be a .NET developer, so I got him to build it for me. If you are running F@H, or some other app that will max your CPU constantly, variable speed fans are not significant. You've basically converted your machine into a steady-state heat source.

Wishing you luck. I'm running to the end of my promotional package with the local Cable provider. If they won't extend the promotional pricing, I'm very tempted to switch to DSL. Slower speed, but much cheaper.
