    New BackBlaze Server build online

They said in the article that saturating the NIC only happens in bench tests and that, in production, a server is filled in 25 days. They also stated that they have far more writes than reads. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a caching server full of SSDs on the front end that simply keeps...

Didn't say it was much, just that that is all they provided. Would make a hell of a home media server; I'm just passing 12TB used at the moment.

The only performance metric provided was that they could easily saturate a GbE link.

There are more bits in there as well. 1. They run their servers blank for a few days due to high infant mortality rates. 2. Higher temps in the middle of racks don't cause more failures. 3. 1% annual failure is currently being observed with the HDS5C3030ALA630 drives.

    New BackBlaze Server build online

These guys offer online storage very cheaply, and they release the entire hardware spec of their servers to the public. Their new one does 135TB in a 4U server for $7400. An interesting quote from someone who would know:

    10 Year Anniversary for StorageForum

I'm actually stunned how well this has gone. The S/N ratio here is like no other place on the internet that I've seen. That we have had such a great core of regulars for such a long time is really amazing. 10 years is a really long freaking time.

    Migrating to Gmail

I recall having multiple choices for verification as well, but modifying an A record was always the most trivial. When I did migrations from Outlook to Google Apps, it would start by redirecting the MX records, with the users still getting on Outlook to read their old messages (they could even...

Thanks Splash! I had completely missed those. Of course, I agree as well, but that card/cable will make just jacking in an old drive that much more convenient.

Indeed. But it doesn't vibrate...as far as I know. The size and rubbery nature of it's wrapping makes it very durable.

    Decent USB Flash Drives

I have had luck with the Patriot Minis. Not the fastest, but small, durable, and I haven't had one go bad yet. If sheer performance is what you are after, I'd get the Flash Voyager.

I did for a long time, but not so much anymore. Most of the things that I would want to protect are already in the possession of the people that I would want to protect them from.

Clearly you don't interact with typical middle management? It used to be that if the TLAs on someone's resume were the same as those on the position requirements, then they were hired. Now they need someone to say that they were good with those TLAs.

    Secondary monitor

The smaller the pixels the better. Of course, this is overridden by the more pixels the better. Having pixels that are infinitely small, and therefore the edge of a letter can be exactly where it needs to be, is ideal. Provided, of course, that the screen is of the physical size you want...

You also don't want to do that with a cheap screen; only something with really good color consistency and viewing angle will still look decent in portrait mode. My cheap 27" ASUS something-or-other looks crap that way, but my Dell U2711 looks awesome.

    question HDD advice, PLEASE?

Over a year ago I put an X25-M 160GB into mine. I know it is out of your budget and not big enough for you, but it is the only experience with drive swapping in PS3s I have. It did speed up loading in GT5 considerably, though ;)

I wouldn't believe that, either. The RevoDrive chips don't have a case around them, and the CPU shows 111F in dead air.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Well, I bought 3 of the 250GB 510s. They'll be in a new ESXi server by the end of next week and in production. I love having a resilient enough failover system to be able to do this kind of thing; it would be so expensive to run HCLed servers with tried-and-true hardware. Even then you might get...

SSDs - State of the Product?

The only thing I was worried about was the RAID controller on the Revo Drives not being detected properly by ESXi. An SATA drive, provided it doesn't fail, requires no verification to make it work.
  36. ddrueding

SSDs - State of the Product?

One of the downsides of wanting more reliability is having to wait longer for the QA. I haven't gotten an answer on ESXi and the RevoDrives, so I'm going with some Intel 510 250GBs instead. This way each VM will get it's own.

If you want to go hardcore, get a pair of these and some of these, add the rest of the hardware and software of your choice (Smoothwall, for example with some basic modifications), and that is about as hardcore/fast as a home-user could possibly want.

SSDs - State of the Product?

With the 960GB version coming in at just over $3k. As soon as I can verify compatibility with ESXi I'll be ordering one. Our DBs (currently running on some X25-Ms) are taking a beating.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

It started life as a mod, then became popular enough that they decided to release it as it's own product. The graphics are not it's strong suit, though it looks decent even at 2560x1440. The strategy is really the impressive part.

I still don't understand how the heat is effectively transferred from the static base to the moving heatsink. First it says the static air of the boundary layer is a problem, then it says that the heatsink is separated from the base by a cushion of air?
