I dont think you've got the right idea.... it's not actuator movement, it's just the sound of the drive spinning... It's not noticeable if you are not close to the drive... and you have to have a quiet room, of course.

plus, i have to think the price will start to come down after several months of availability. It will be interesting to see how this drive proves itself over the next year.

well, they're using a single 36 GB platter.. what's stopping them from adding another platter? cost? design? heat/noise? I think 36GB is perfectly usable... most people would probably use this as their boot/App drive... I'm using ~16GB for that... If you had just 1 drive in your case.. this...

hmm.. i forgot if i have AAM enabled or disabled in my WD drives... i think it's set on quiet operation on both actually.

I purposely have AAM set to the fastest speed(not disabled). But it has a slight idle spinning noise and even with AAM set to quietest operation you can still hear it make slight sounds when it does more than track to track seeks.. my 1200BB is just awesomely quiet, both idle and seeks are...

heatsinks used to attach to the CPU's themselves... personally I would much rather use the p4 or the socket7/370/A type of heatsinks than the old socket 1/2/3. oh, and splash.. I think what you're looking for is called a VIA C3... maybe not a .9 micron process yet, but can be passively cooled...

I must be really lucky... my 1200BB is quieter than my 40GB ATA IV... unfortunately my 800JB is now my loudest new unit... it's probably quieter than my 2x 75gxp raid 0 that it replaced... but not by much.

Handruin, why not just use an external HDD? could go from computer to computer very easily and you could probably get a large maxtor d540x for less than $1 per GB if you can find a sale or a rebate. if you're interested in a NAS type of box I would check out the new features of Ghost 2003...

I use slower rated CDs to burn audio.... i almost always burn audio at 4 or 8x just to make sure I have no problems .. and i usually burn more than 80min onto an audio CD for some reason... so I'm sure the lower burn speed helps when getting near the edge of the disc.

All of the internal ls120 drives I've seen have an IDE interface... it's too bad that they operate in PIO mode... I would prefer a UDMA device just so it wont hog the bus if connected to the same channel as a CD-ROM or HDD.

They do mass produce 3 stage (off, low, high) A/C's ... or you could buy 2 small A/C's that would give you the same effect.

good choice for a single card solution. I was thinking the same thing for one of my PC's... however, now that the soft tweek has come out to turn a 9500pro 128 into a 9700 I think the 9500pro 128 is looking more attractive than the 9000 pro.

There's alot of Sparc stuff on ebay.. whole systems, parts, accesories.... But I'd suggest getting some research on what you need for your certification before you consider buying one. (You want to make sure it will meet your needs).

Steve, as stated in the article, the problem affects a small percentage (between 1 and 10%) of australian DVD's... and is caused by poor manufacturing. These problems are easily preventable and I suspect that they will work themselves out as time goes on.
