Dreamhost offers SSH access. I believe Merc was using them awhile back. I don't have any personal experience with them though.

Earth Hour March 29, 2008 at 8PM Local Time

I turned off my lights and my electric heat, but I left my computer on. I'm on the 9th floor, so I have a pretty good view of other buildings in the city. Considering Chicago was supposed to be the flagship city in the US, it didn't seem like that many people turned their lights off. I think it...

Psst, Tannin, Safari comes to M$, the browser for the rest of us

Have you ever used Safari on a PC? I have and it sucks. I don't want to use any IE browser, but I have to make sure my web applications work with all browsers. This means I regularly run 4-5 different browsers at the same time.

    Thinkpad T61

Your company might run it's own Windows Update server, which makes it easy to block updates. Going from IE6 to IE7 isn't nearly as big as the change from 7 to 8. If you try the beta and just browse around to normal sites the vast majority aren't rendered the same way. Google Maps is a good example.

    Thinkpad T61

I installed IE8 beta and it appears to have broken several of my sites. These sites render correctly with IE6, IE7, FF, Safari, and Opera. It appears all the hacks I used to get IE6/7 to render correctly are causing problems for IE8.

    Thinkpad T61

Oh great, another version of IE to have to write hacks for and test with. Of the websites I work on IE7 versus IE6 use is just about even. Whereas Firefox use is over 85% the most recent version. The real problem is that I can't run different versions of IE on the same machine without having a...

SSDs - State of the Product?

    low-end laser printers these days?

I have a used LJ5 that I no longer use if you want to buy it. My parents have been bugging me about getting it out of their house for years. Shipping it wouldn't be cheap though.

    Trouble Ticket management software/service?

The company where I work uses ServiceDesk. I asked our lead help desk guy and he says he loves it. I haven't used it personally though. It's not cheap for the commercial version, but there is a free version you could try out.

I'll probably have to write this myself ....

I think you would be best served by writing some VBScript. I think you could hack something together from online examples in a couple hours pretty easily.

    low-end laser printers these days?

I've used an older version of the Samsung ML-2510, which seemed fine for a cheap printer. Refills for the toner are also available fairly inexpensively on eBay.

What I miss about the Intel P4...

So, what's more efficient an electric heat pump or forced-air natural gas? I know there are a ton of factors. Like temperature, cost/Kwh and cost/therm. My condo uses an electric heat pump and it seems to be very efficient unless the outside temperature drops below about 20° F.

    Camcorder Advice

My sister is looking to buy a camcorder. Her major interest is that it be easy to use and easy to watch the videos she creates. I have no idea what the best recording technology is. End of the World As We Know It

Mubs, are you sure you did this math correctly? By "US currency inflates by 10%," I mean that the US Treasury prints 10% more money this year, which would devalue the American dollar by 10% compared with another currency that isn't pegged to the dollar. So, if I bought $100 worth of Indian...
