    photo Digital Pictureframe Reccomendations?

I really don't understand why those things are that expensive. Aren't they basically a small LCD Panel, a memory card reader, and an inexpensive processor to do the extremely small amount of processing necessary to read a picture from a memory card and display it on the screen. Much larger LCD...

What's the best wireless router these days?

I'd like the option to run either dd-wrt or tomato, but are there any draft 802.11N routers that support tomato?

What's the best wireless router these days?

That's a pricey router. The Linksys WRT150N has wireless-N and is $70. I don't think I really have a huge need for gigabit ethernet right now. It seems to support dd-WRT but not Tomato.

What's the best wireless router these days?

I think I'll stick with something I can order rather than building my own for now. Though I'm sure your $350 self built router is much nicer than what I'll end up with. It looks like the Linksys WRT54GL is easily hackable if the OEM firmware can't handle my load. I'm really not doing too much...

What's the best wireless router these days?

I need to buy a wireless router in the next couple weeks and would like to hear some opinions about people's favorites. I'd like to spend around $50-60 if at all possible. Are Linksys routers still highly unreliable? Which has the lowest performance degradation when I'm have 10 torrents going?

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

I helped a friend move a 36" Sony TV a couple years ago. I think it weighed right around 200 lbs, but I could be off a little. We had to carry it down some stairs and I thought my back was going to break.

    America's suburban dream?

Interesting article. I plan to never leave the city. My dream certainly isn't in a suburb. Several of my friends talk about leaving the city in a few years when they start having kids, they might change their minds if they have to be reliant on a car when gas prices are $8-10/gallon. Or if some...

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

He didn't tell me exactly what he is going to use it for, I guess it could be anything. I think the main reason he wants it is because he's going to get his MBA and his current company is taking back his work laptop. If you are referring to the misspelling of the word "discrete," I apologize...

WD velociraptor. It's nothing if not different

I would guess that WD wants to limit how this drive can be deployed. I doubt it would get nearly enough cooling in a laptop to function well. By giving it a proprietary connector and forcing people to remove the warranty-voiding sticker they are giving you a strong hint of what not to do with...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

What can any politician do to lower gas prices in the long term? I think people overestimate the amount of power that the US government or any government has. Petroleum is an international commodity and there is no replacement for it. There's only so much you can pump out of the ground each day...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

  35. timwhit

Slow network with large numbers of files.

Do you think this is a client-side or a server-side problem? If it's server side you could try a samba share. I have a feeling it's client side though.

SSDs - State of the Product?

That drive only does 80MB/s write, not the 100MB/s that Lunar is looking for. To get 100MB/s+ write this is the only single SSD that does it I believe.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Not everyone can live in the bay area, DD. There are very few other places in the world that have that constant of a climate year round. I'm not quite sure what you mean by an inhospitable climate. Does Chicago qualify? NYC? Toronto? Moscow?

    Where's everybody?

I would love to ride it and see the stations. I'd like to see any pictures you happen to take. Chicago also has smart cards, the problem is that they aren't mandated. There are still old-style magnetic strip cards for sale and buses allow people to pay with cash. This really slows down...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

The United States oil production peaked in 1970. However, I'm pretty sure that 38 years later it will be able to beat 1970 production and produce ~20.5 million barrels per day (consumption) even though the US produces ~8.3 million barrels per day. Good luck with that. Seriously if I were you I...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

I think the govt would rather institute a tax on "record profits," rather than raising the gas tax. Which makes no sense because it should change the price the consumer pays anyways (all you armchair economists feel free to dispute this). I'm all for increasing the federal gas tax, but I doubt...

Pharmacy industry's manipulation of the public

JTR, maybe you should consider seeing someone about your carpel tunnel. I know you hate doctors and all, but they could shoot you with some cortisone (which shouldn't be all that expensive) or do orthoscopic surgery (which will be expensive). If it works then you will be able to work more.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'd be worried about static shock or blunt force trauma wrecking a $350 drive. Plus, I doubt it has any kind of warranty. You buy one first and let me know how it works, then I will follow.
