    7200.8

Unsurprisingly the 400GB model is similar to the 300GB model. Access times are long and seeks are on the loud side, probably due to the third platter. The SATA version will probably be the darling of the week at SR. Anyway, it is good for bulk storage and cheaper than the Hitachi.

    DVD burner recommendations.

The NEC 3500AG works fine and is less than $70. I would buy another one, but my system cannot handle two IDE channels due to the excessive RAM and Firewire is too slow.

    7200.8

Is it just me or this worse than ever? Apparently not one of them has even bothered to buy a drive yet. Brilliant.

    7200.8

Same sh*t different day? I bought a 300GB drive for testing and it seems to be the same mediocre drive as the 7200.7, but with three platters. The 7200.8 continues the tradition of ridiculous Barracuda access times. 8.0 msec seek, yeah right!

How to make a gigapixel picture

Probably 95% of the subjects are horizontal, stationary scenics. Whether the body is vertical or horizontal depends on the final output and needed quality. A vertical pan of a horizontal scene theoretically yields 50% higher resolution than a horizontal pan. If the image were the usual 2:3...

How to make a gigapixel picture

I saw Max in Colorado this September. You should see his equipment for panoramas. First he hauls out three big blocks of wood for a base, then sets up a huge, heavy tripod - the kind usually used for telescopes and such. There is a mounting system which allows movement on multiple axes for...

    Annual Upgrade

Mark, The EOS3 is a nice body, though I would have gladly traded a diopter for the flakey eye-control AF selection. The plastic body always made me nervous. I still have one with a 70-200/2.8 L in the back of the closet somewhere. I have not used either for over three years. The 1Ds is fine...

    Annual Upgrade

I think it will still be a couple of years before 64-bot Windows and applications are available and more RAM is usable. If I can't get some good improvement now without high expense, would it make more sense to build another PC to do some work in parallel?

    Annual Upgrade

Yeah, yeah, I know. I f*cked up big time in trusting a local dealer. Anyway, I don't have a body and will be travleling during the second consignment, and then it will be winter, so I may as well wait until spring. The main problem now is to get rid of the 1D MK II. I'm still keeping the 1Ds...

    Annual Upgrade

Usyually Q4 is the time to upgrade the main system, but this year I don't know what to do. I have an old system, P4 3.2@3.4, 4GB PC 3200, 15k.3 boot drive, whole bunch of IDE storage, etc. Of course I could use a performance boost, but it seems that the speed gains are diminishing in the last...

    [NEWZ] Svelte Monster: 3-Platter 400 GB 7200.8

Finally! Of course I need to buy one each in SATA and PATA. 133 is not a standard size, but presumably there at least will be 120GB 1-platter drives and 250 GB 2-platter drives which will be cheaper to make than the current 3-head and 6-head drives, respectively. There is a confusing thread...

    15K.4

The SR review of the 15K.4 is up and it is disappointing. The MAU crushes it in the workstation tests, but the server benchmarks for both the new Seagate and Fujitsu 15K drives are worse than their predecessors. I have been witing forever (well, 24 months) for a new drive and this is not good...

    Bigger Drives When?

Great. :( How did you do the RMA, online or by phone? I purchased the 740GD as a bare drive online. Does that make any difference?
  21. LunarMist

    Bigger Drives When?

That sounds like me! Seriously, there is too big a performance difference to ignore and with average file sizes of ~50-200MB, the total number of files per partition is not that many.

    Sectors in a track

Take a look here, too. Although a bit dated, the principles are still relevant. The page is from Charles Kozierok's PC Guide site, which is also reproduced at SR. (Some may remember his departure after a run-in with SuperC.)
  25. LunarMist

    Sectors in a track

Yes, hard drives have multiple zones containing more sectors per track at the beginning (outer) cylinders.

    Bigger Drives When?

Apparently not. It is always something with WD drives - whining, humming, screeching, hot, and now this. Sorry I need to vent, but f*ck WD and the horse they rode in on.
  27. LunarMist

    Bigger Drives When?

I thought about hot-melt glue, but I removed the drive because there is no use for it in my system. I did not think about an RMA, assuming it would not be covered. I bought the 740GD ages ago and probably could not find the receipt anyway.

    Bigger Drives When?

Well this sucks. :blue: In replacing the WD740GD with the 300GB Maxline III, part of the WD SATA connection broke off in the cable. It still functions when that same cable is used (held in place well enough), but useless to sell. Is this some POS WD or what?

    Bigger Drives When?

    Bigger Drives When?

    Bigger Drives When?

WD is not in the picture, primarily because they make nothing larger than 250GB drives. Since Seagate is returning to the 3-platter platform, I see no reason to go with WD capacity drives. Their GD series is another story. ;) The 740GD boots amazingly fast, making my 15k.3 look sluggish in...

    Bigger Drives When?

Well, I really don't know what to do now. According to the SR thread the 400GB 7200.8 will not be out until at least December. The 7K400 is a little hot and noisy besides being pricey. I suppose replacing the 740GD with a
  46. LunarMist

    Bigger Drives When?

I think the cost of cache is relatively little compared to making a 5-platter drive. The 3-platter 7200.8 will be much less expensive to produce than the 7K400, so prices of 400GB drives will decrease after a while. I am not comfortable with drives from NewEgg. Do they still package hard...

    Opinions on Ghost 9

DI6 (2002) creates two floppies and True Image 6 creates four boot floppies. I don't kow about the newer Acronis products. Unfortunately the DI7 image file format is not compatible with previous versions of DI.
