    Spam Attack

Suddenly I am getting tons of spam all day, maybe 75/hour. All of them are about mail delivery failures. My mailbox will be full when I return from work tomorrow if this keeps up. Is something special happening today? Usually I get about 30 spams/day on that address.

    Dell's Price Protection Offer

Yeah, but those TYs are only 8x. The Verbatim 16x works great in my 3500, but I am looking for an alternate for the second disc. Are there any other good 16x media?

    Reading Multiple Cards

The difference in Extreme III speeds is not that much, 8.0 MB/sec. for CF vs. 8.6 for SD. The differences between CF and SD in the 1D MK II are more, but I no longer have that body. The 20D needs fast CF cards as well, since it has a measly 6-frame buffer that fills in 1.0 sec. at 5 FPS. 1GB...

[NEWZ]: Hitachi 7K500, T7K250 Models Announced

Well, you will probably horrified to know that I purchased a 100GB Seagate Monumentus 5400.2 from Newegg on Tuesday, before I read this thread. :o Now I see that they are even less at CompUSA this week and was contemplating adding a couple more.

    Reading Multiple Cards

The SanDisk Extreme III cards are rated 133x (20 MB/sec). Presumably they use the new spec and there will be appropriately faster readers as well. Unfortunately the new cards will not be available until the end of January, and I need to buy another 8GB of CF cards next week. I hate buying...

[NEWZ]: Hitachi 7K500, T7K250 Models Announced

I assume you mean the Seagate ATA drives have problems, not the SCSI drives. I have been using nothing but Seagato boot drives for years: 18XL, X15, X15-36LP, 15K.3. I was being a bit sarcastic about the SR reliability database, Tony. You may recall that I agreed with your comments in the...

    Reading Multiple Cards

Pradeep is correct. PCMCIA adapters are terrible, achieving only 1.4 MB/sec. at 100% CPU. I already have the Delkin Cardbus adapter and have used it for years. Unfortunately CF reads speeds are limited to about 4.5-5 MB/sec. on most cards. I have used one Cardbus adapter and the external...

[NEWZ]: Hitachi 7K500, T7K250 Models Announced

Wow, are Hitachi drives more reliable than Seagate drives now? I don't have access to the SR database and have been out of the loop. I was rather unimpressed by the 3-week Hitachi RMA though.

    Reading Multiple Cards

In order to speed the download process I sometimes use two CF card readers simultaneously. However, the notebook has only two ports, so I would lose the mouse. A USB hub could be used, but that means more stuff to carry around and set up. Are there any card readers with two independent CF slots?

[NEWZ]: Hitachi 7K500, T7K250 Models Announced

I do not see how religion has any bearing on the comparison. I simply prefer cooler and quieter drives with faster transfer rates. Presumably the drives with more platters will be more expensive as well.

[NEWZ]: Hitachi 7K500, T7K250 Models Announced

Who wants 5x100GB platters? I would rather wait a bit for Seagate's 3x166GB/platter drive.

    New or Refurbished Drive?

I don't think HGST is very worthy. The RMA time for the drive was three weeks. :( Years ago I had an IBM drive replaced within the week. ;)

    New or Refurbished Drive?

Kevin/Tony, I expect that the drive will be labeled if it is refurbished, but did not know if the bag would also be labeled as such. Given the mfg. date, it is probably new. Is it usual to receive new drives for replacements? Perhaps it is no longer economical to repair 200GB drives.

    New or Refurbished Drive?

After 3 weeks the replacement 200GB 250GXP arrived on 12/14 during my vacation. Now the question is whether it is a new drive or a refurbished drive. The antistatic bag is sealed and completely opaque. The label on the bag reads Made in Thailand by Hitachi... and the date is NOV-04. If it a...

    100GB Notebooko Drives

Sorry if this sounds like a silly SR thread, but between Fujitsu and Toshiba which would you choose for a 4200 RPM 100GB 2.5" drive? I need a couple of drives to upgrade two external storage devices. (Performance is not an issue and 4200 RPM is better for battery life and cost.) Is there any...

    Windows Explorer Struggle

I discovered by accident that the JPG file association with Photoshop was causing the problem, and received links confirming similar experiences. It seems there is no cure other than removing PS as the default application for JPGs. It is annoying since the problem did not occur in Win2K.

Thanks, but that is not it. The same thing occurs in Detail, List or Icon mode. I think Windows is making some icons in the background. Indexing service is disabled. That is one of the the first thing I do after installation. I don't normally worl with JPGs on this notebook, but the...

Are you using DPP 1.5? Even worse, the subnotebook with 900MHz Pentium M ULV takes 39 seconds. :eekers: At least the 100% preview is much faster than with the older DPP and the horrid FVU/EVU.

    Camera with super clarity

Better is relative to intended usage. I suspect that Swift's camera is not handholdable and that it is only useful for stationary images. I'll stick with my "low-res" 1Ds MKII. 16.6 megapixels and 30 FPM is sufficient for general use and the occasional big enlargement. :)

I noticed something strange upon further examination. There is a nearly continuous decay in transfer rate, which indicates there are a very large number of zones. Is this a new way of maximizing data density?
