    Monitor Dying?

Thanks, all. I was mainly interested in the size and power consumption to ensure that the graphics card would integrate easily into my current system. It is nice to know that the cost is trivial compared to the monitor. I guess it is time to try the NEC 3090, unless there is a better option...

    Feeding your DSLR (flash memory)

SD cards are too small, flimsy, and fiddly to efficiently use in the field. :( They are better suited to cheapie DSLRs, P/S digicams, small video cameras, and consumer electronics. SD technology and capacity vs. performance will probably continue to lag behind CF. CF will be using SATA modes...

You are only using 38% of the lenses for 35mm, so the edges are good enough not to need much overlap. Nevertheless, the IQ tradeoff between primes and zooms is similar for pans and single frames. The main difference is that you can shoot multi-row pans to gain vertical angle of view instead of...

I mostly use >50% overlap with the L lenses (many have limited optical quality). Primes tend to be better and of course teles need less overlap for geometric reasons. Especially with wideangles the edges are often sawtoothed depending on the style of remapping projection, so greater overlap...

I've used Nikon SLRs since '76 and some are very nice bodies, but I reserve "special" for the Leica and Contax gear.

    Larger LCD Monitors

I'd rather have 1440 vertical pixels (4:3 ratio) by 1920. Now I will probably buy a 2560x1600 monitor when I'd prefer narrower.

    Feeding your DSLR (flash memory)

The new EX3 cards are labeled 30MB/sec. and identified by "2008" in the tests. I did not find the latest Kiss/Rebel version. Maybe it is new. Nasty little bodies for normal hands to work with if my 400D is any example.

I meant that a HD is my system bottleneck for the first time in several years. I don't use your software and therefore cannot compare processing times. My pans usually start out with no more than 5GB of TIF source files, but with substantial frame overlap.

    Feeding your DSLR (flash memory)

The results are quite accurate in my considerable experience with DSLRs (100+ MP), CF cards (100s of GB) and SD cards. Notice that the write speed of some cheap cards does not measure up to snuff in real-world use. I used a similar home test - photographing a print at a fixed lighting level...

    Monitor Dying?

Oh. I thought the video cards for 30" displays cost $300-500. That must have changed in the last few years. I would have no use for dual DVI outputs. Actually the monitor needs dual inputs instead. However, a 30" display has only one of the full resolution inputs and one of lower quality...

Asymmetrical output cropping may be the most useful feature, depending on when it occurs in the workflow and if temp file sizes are reduced. It would not be very beneficial if done only at the end, since cropping .psb files afterwards is trivial, though may take a few minutes.

    Monitor Dying?

What minimalist video card would be needed for a 30" display? I don't want one of those big honking ones that has a giant fan and occupies two PCI slots. I believe most of those flamethrowers are for the kids playing video games or movies. A small, quiet 2D only card is desirable. Thanks.

    Monitor Dying?

If one doesn't care too much about the image quality, cheaper may be better. :) Calibration does nothing for uniformity of illumination and color, min/max brightness, gamut, and changes caused by viewing angle. Some of the cheap monitors are crazy bright and suffer in the darker gradations at...

I just want a compact P/S that can produce better results than a film P/S from ~15 years ago and have some reasonable functionality. DSLRs reached that point with the 1Ds in late 2002. Digital P/S seems to be going in the wrong direction both in image quality and functionality.
