XPP SP2 does not like my old SATA system and wants drivers from a floppy disk during installation. Of course I have no floppy disk. :( I searched some articles on the net, and it seems to be a common problem. Unfortunately, answers are either the obvious (buy a floppy drive) or too...

Not I. I was not complaining about the web sized image. It is fine for the purpose. However, some images are just not the right subjects for the web. It is not unlike the difference between shooting for gallery prints compared to shooting for stock.

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

Customers are actually using their notebooks and the ambient temperature is not 20 °C everywhere? How shocking. :) A pinhead beancounter probably calculated only 4 hours of use per day or something, and the cheapie chips were designed to function just long enough for the warranty period.

    Borrowing 4TB?

It is useful for some particular purposes, but I have been using PS for that since the 90s. Ideally the DOF of each frame should overlap. Major differences in focus distance will create artifacts from the difference in viewing angle/magnification and often look unnatural as well. Make sure to...

Interestingly, the retail Maxtor 1TB drive is made in China and has a shorter warranty than the Seagate drive. Are the Maxtor and Seagate drives different in design and construction?

    Travelstar 7k320 ships(soon)$220?

I have been using the WD 320GB 5400 RPM drive for months now. The Samsung 500GB M6 has higher average STR than that. The chart does not show the max, but the Samsung should be similar or in the mid-70 MB/sec. range if the WD drive is proportional. Either is fine for practical use. I suppose...

Sharpening for the web is generally done at 0.3 after resizing. Some images that look appropriately sharpened on CRTs look oversharpened on LCDs. It can help to sharpen asymmetrically to emphasize the dark side, or use a reasonable adaptive sharpening technique instead.

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

I don't mean for business. Work computers of any type are useless to me due to lack of admin rights. Personal notebooks are limited by the size that fits in with my other gear. Any of the Thinkpads I'd want are too large.

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

Color looks pretty good. The fill is excessive and blue, and the overall exposure is over, which is rather common with the limited headroom on a P/S. At least you did not drag the shutter. If you do a lot of early/late fill flash try a 1/8 or even 1/4 CTO gel over the built-in flash. I...

The D300 is less heavy without the grip. :) Have you used the 1Ds or 1Ds MK II? Try holding one with the 500/4 for a while and compare that with the D300 sans grip + 200-400. The MK III bodies have lithium ion battey packs and are therefore somewhat lighter than older 1D series.

I'm amazed how lazy - to think 220 is not enough! What are you doing continuously all that time that you cannot take a few seconds to change cards? Ever change a film back with a dark slide? Quality is more important than quantity. In the old days a dozen 4x5s seemed like plenty for one...

    Feeding your DSLR (flash memory)

Yes, thousands of people. It's like asking if you have ever had a hard drive fail. A home user with only a drive or two at one time may never have a failure. Of course you know better than that when seeing large numbers. The top tier cards such as SanDisks may have lower failure rates, but...

Current monitor is less than 3 years old, but I'm hoping it will last for a very long time as a second system monitor after being repaired. The yellow line is present for the first few minutes only. I could live with the defect indefinitely if necessary, but warranty expires in November.
