So what did we get from PK this year? Canon has the 5D MK II yuck, and only two new lenses which are not really interesting. They just keep tweaking and regurgitating MK II of everything. Meanwhile, there is no D3X from Nikon. :( Sony has some possibilities, but lacks long teles and pro...

I am so afraid to ask how you know that. So I will need to upgrade the OS by ~2010 when hard drives exceed 2TB in capacity? That is really a bummer. :(

    Large Array?

So what happens if one has 2 or more really big dicks in an array? I'm thinking that several of the 1.5TB drives could free up some space, but is it possible to exceed 2TB on the old OS such as XP? Is a special controller or filesystem needed?

    USB Drive Formatting

Yes, I know. :( No internal connector was available on the 3 notebooks. How does Fry's treat returns for retail hard drives? It is possible to get a refund? What do they do with the drives? I don't see drives back on the shelves with the ridiculous slightly reduced price tags. However, I...

XP error checking does not complete - unable to check whatever. PM indicates some partition errors, however accepting the changes does not fix the problem. It is not possible to create a simple 238GB partition in the disk manager. Formatting fails with Unable to format, yet a 1TB format and...

    USB Drive Formatting

I am having difficulty formatting a 1TB drive in a USB enclosure (tried two different brands). There is no problem when there is only one partition of 1TB, but 3 smaller partitions are absolutely necessary since this is a backup drive for other drives. There was no problem with 500GB USB...

Lack of IS is a huge issue for me with lenses at 600mm +. IS makes a difference even on a 5-series tripod, especially if there is any wind. 600/4IS w/2X is optically OK, but not the greatest. For me the point of the 800/5.6 would be to use it with and without the 1.4x.

    US vs. Japan

Well, it depends on your culture. I could not stand living in NYC and too many of the people on public transportation are just plain gross. Last time I took a train (years ago) a bag was stolen. F*** that I say. I prefer living in suburban to slightly rural areas if I had to make that choice.

POV is point of view and CA is chromatic aberration. CA is not necessarily quite symmetric, so it may be desirable to apply different amounts to different parts of the image by using layers and masks. You probably won't see it that much with EF lenses on 1.6x bodies. Many corrections are...

I understand that the electric motors and control systems are probably long-lived, but how long will the batteries perform well? After some years there will be plenty of older cars that will require new batteries. How much does that cost? Especially in the southland there are a lot of old...

    dSLR thread

I'd probably use it once a year, mostly on the 1Ds MK III. 500/4 is a much more useful lens overall for most purposes. Unfortunately Canon 1.6x bodies don't AF at f/8, so that is only a limited solution. Additionally, the crappy AF pattern of xxD bodies is not good for moving subjects. That...

Does anyone have the 800/5.6 EF-L yet (maybe Tony)? Other than the main problem, getting on the airlines, a serious concern would be selling the lens later on, though it should not depreciate too much over time.

Another point is that everyone does not live close to work. In some areas many younger people (20- or 30-something) with children that have a 30-40 mile, 60-90 minute one-way commute because that is the only way they can afford a decent house.

Where is all the power for charging coming from? The power grid is marginal as it is in many places and there are possibilities of rolling blackouts, etc. in the summers. I bought some graphics card a couple of months ago that someone here liked. Will the card fail if I only use it a few dozen hours per month and with no 3D functions? I am not sure if the failure is primarily heat threshold dependent or if it degrades over time even with low power use.

I never cared so much for the three lenses you mentioned, though they are versatile in some ways. I will be disposing of a 100-400 and 24-105 along with a 1Ds MK II. Assuming that the theoretical new Canon body is around that MP, you may want to consider how the lenses will be used.
