For personal use? I'm not sure what the differences are. I'd not buy a product named Blackjack since it has such negative connotations.

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

My CFLs are not lasting very long either. The problem is that they are designed to be on for hours at a time and the lifetime is definitely reduced with numerous short cycles. (The warmup period sucks, too.) I have one 9W on 24/7 in the kitchen hood and it lasted about 2.5 years, which is not...

SSDs - State of the Product?

80GB G2 prices are still all over the place. How can they claim with a straight face that the prices are $10 off from "Original Price" when they were both $349.99 a few days ago and OEM was originally $229.99?

Some of us have no choice. I carry a BlackBerry on business duty, but it is not for personal use. I would not buy one for the typical 1-2 valid emails received each day.

    Corrupt files after network transfer

I copied 7.45GB of CR2 files from one computer to the other in 252 sec. I don't know if that is normal speed between computers.

    Corrupt files after network transfer

Are you converting files on the other server or is it just that they were previously copied? Sometimes the OS or an app is creating an evil preview of the embedded thumbnail that slows down copies - even if you can't see it. However, that is usually with TIF (/RAW) or JPG files.

    MP3 player rant

I've purchased only a limited numer of CDs over the years and likely received more as gifts than anything else. I'd probably not find 32GB of music worth listening to. I'm not much into music now anyway, having mostly lost interest after the 70's. But I'm not a StereoDude. Maybe I should be...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I've lost interest in the Intel G2 at this point. I reconfigured some drives. XP32 is actually booting off of a 7GB partition at the front of a 1001FALS, with page file on the same X25-E as the XP64 used primarily.

    Building Petabytes on a budget

My experience with PM has not been good. The controller has to support it and the modes are typical RAID levels implemented in firmware. I suppose some configurations with just the right hardware and OS would work to some degree, but that is a half-assed storage solution with insufficient...

I have several Seagate and WD SATA 2.5" drives which are laid out the same, i.e., platters are at the base of the drive adjacent to the connectors and actuators are at the top (slightly right of center viewed from the label side. My Fujitsu and Samsung 2.5" SATA drives are the opposite, laid...

SSDs - State of the Product?

It might help alleviate problems with cheapo SSD writes, but the data still has to come from somewhere (reads). Caching a few GB is not the same thing at all. I think SSD is here to stay in the long term for capacity increases, reduced power, and ruggedness. The new Turbo Memory is an add on.
  43. LunarMist

    Stacked

I had a few 2.5" drives stacked in the bin and noticed that there is a magnetic force between them. Presumably there is a PM for the actuator motor. The polarity all appear to be the same. Is there any risk of damage?

    WD 2TB @ 7200 RPM

Yes, we all have several of the Samsung 1.5TB 5400 RPM drives. Didn't I start that fad? :D WD reached 2TB at 5400 RPM a while ago, but 7200RPM is new. Presumably Seagate will follow with 2TB at 7200 RPM, which should not be difficult given they were first to 1.5TB at 7200 RPM. However, I...
