SSDs - State of the Product?

OMG, I thought you had some sort of SSD setup by now. STR is so 1990s. IOPs is all the rage. Do yourself a favor. Just buy one of the Vortex drives and see the difference. Two is better than one, but I question that more will help much in your antiquated system. I'd put the money into new...

RAID5 OCE gone wrong... Windows doesn't detect partition

Yeah, I've hosed several, but never without a backup or two. In 6 days one could build the world. The ultimate question is the value of the data. I would not send hard drives to some foreign country for data recovery.

I think DD has been smoking too many SSD fumes. :mrgrn: The drive is two years old, so it hits around 60GB/sec. max. On a 100Mbs connection it takes forever to copy a 40.0GB file. :eek4:

Thanks, all. The router is only 100Mbs, which is not so good. Unfortunately the setup was over a week ago, I'm long gone now, and the user most likely won't want to buy a new wireless and configure it. Since the wireless router is attached to the modem, will another laptop in the house...

Well, that stinks. Is the issue with the computers or the wireless? For example, would a 3rd computer be able to simultaneously access the internet wirelessly?

    Network

Yes that is essentially correct. Computer A is the notebook. Computer B is the system I built recently. The user wanted to be able to copy files between them sometimes and wireless is too slow for a few GB each time. So I added a spare 100Mb NIC to the main system and it is connected to the...

Both computers lose the internet when connected directly to each other through a separate line. For internet, one is on the wireless and one is on the port on the wireless router. What is going on?

SSDs - State of the Product?

    4K Sectors?

I may get a few for the backups but my experience with WD drives about 9 months ago indicates that 5400 RPM 2TB drives are not the best option for the primaries. Samsung is always way behind the times, seemingly waiting until the technology is cheap and mature before jumping into the market.

I plan to buy 16 x 2TB of the old-fashioned drives in the next 2 months. I am hoping that gets me through the upheaval of the XP era. I'm not sure if using mostly Hitachi mostly drives is the best choice. WD 72.K is too expensive. :(

I'm not sure how cost affects that more than a few seconds. The key factor is simplicity. A desktop with a single fast SSD should be faster than spinning up and initializing 16 drives in three arrays.
