    Hitachi 2TB, 5 platters :P

Newegg is not really an OEM. Samsung probably has allocations to fill and Newegg is a lower priority.

That is not saying it is nice. Traffic does not bother me as much as people.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Are you are using them personally in heavy use or elsewhere?

SSDs - State of the Product?

Look at the reviews. There are plenty of bad ones and numerous similar defects. The manufacturer seems to have poor customer service and a useless rebate policy.

    Mandelbrot Fractal - crazy magnification

It could have used more lateral movement and is somewhat overly long.

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

I assume it is this one. How are dual memory channels supporting 16GB spread out over 6 slots? The 6-slot X58 systems support 24GB.

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

LGA 1156 seems like a step backwards since the boards only have 4 memory slots. :(

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

I had a WD3000 something up until last year and then put it in a system I built for someone else. The VR was a good drive in 2008, but is too slow for a boot drive nowadays and is too small for data storage.

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

If Greg will be keeping the board for years, then wouldn't LGA 1366 be the way to go for future upgrades?

Luck you. I've never been to the B&H store, but NYC in general is too scary for me.

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

But won't the new top-end consumer Intel CPUs use the LGA 1366 socket?

Greg, Do you know that Alt+Print Screen copies only the active window? ;)

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

HD Tach can have an issue with RAID, not SSDs in general.

    SAS Expander bottleneck?

Well it is an expander. If you want top performance there are better controller options.

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

I thought about getting the smaller version of that OCZ unit, but it makes more sense to have a controller than can be used in the future with better SSDs. Unfortunately the OCZ is not a viable option anyway because there is only one free PCIe 8x slot and the computer must support 16 hard...

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

I should just buy the damned thing. I'm procrastinating for no good reason other than cost. How is NewEgg for returns if I simply don't like it?
  29. LunarMist

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

How is that LSI card working out for you? Is it possible to create separate arrays on the same controller without interference in performance? For example, I'd like to have two SSDs in RAID 0 and use the other ports for single drives.

    Drive Failure?

I've moved everything around so much, I don't know what was what. Now I have 3 of the Hibachi 2TB drives in there. Two are used as a pair, which I usually avoid.

    Drive Failure?

Sure, if I had a server room. :) There is only one removable, trayless bay in each computer. There is also a 2-drive "toaster" connected to one for temporary/backup use, and a 1-drive version for the other computer. The other drives are internal. I really should upgrade my 8-year old case...

    Drive Failure?

Fine, except that the Hitachi drives are deep in the bowels of the other computer. ;) Now the WD drive is under test in Windows on that system, so I have to wait for it to finish. Only 02:05:48 to go...

    Drive Failure?

The Hitachi bootable DFT disk is not supporting a USB keyboard and mouse. WTF?
  42. LunarMist

    Drive Failure?

I hope not. The bootable kind usually don't like non-ICH ports.
  43. LunarMist

    Drive Failure?

I don't think that the Intel is involved. One drive is on an Adaptec and the other on some other controller. I moved them around as well as the cables and it locked up again. Now I have removed 3 drives and switched them around. I'm planning to reformat each drive and then run a test in...

A 6Gbps RAID controller like this one would be good for current and future faster SSDs.

    RAID SSD controller?

I was thinking maybe it is Merc, but 1961 is probably the born on date.
  48. LunarMist

    Drive Failure?

It is very strange. One of two (not sure which) WD20EADS drives is producing the error, but the problem does not occur when a 7K2000 is disconnected.
