There was a 50/1 in the late 1980s, but it is not made any more. I recall they were about $1700. None of the fast 50mm lenses are really sharp in the corner to the corner sense, but that is not their purpose.

Years ago NJ made a mess of one camera three times in a row until they finally replaced the whole sensor assembly for free. Since then I have used Irvine. Any of the MK III defects such as sub-mirror mounts, side-to-side adjustments for peripheral AF accuracy, oil under the AA filter, ERR 99...

It makes little sense to replace the sensor for one hot pixel. Ask them to apply the mirror fixes and whatever other service is required as well. They may very well only charge the $30 shipping/handling fee. FWIW I've had better luck with Canon in Irvine CA than the one in NJ.

What do the video cards have to do with anything? I will buy a basic, cool and quiet card that is suitable for 2D. Video cards and PCIe slots are not expected to change soon or are they?

High ISO NR kills the buffer capacity IIRC. Anyway, 400-800 is not really high ISO. How many frames do you have, 30-50K?

Well I'm assuming that 4GHz is easy with a decent heatsink.

Canon will map out the hot pixels if you ask when you send the camera in for service. I usually send them in once a year for cleaning and checking.

I have a ca. 2008 technology system with Q9650@4.05GHz and 8GB RAM on GA EP45-UP3P. XP32 boot drive is old fashioned X25-E and XP64 boot drive is X25-M G2, with the page file on the X25-E in both cases.

I think this was covered in the SSD thread, but we are well into it. There is no need to wait unless you need large capacity.

    When to Build New System

Mainly I am interested in the motherboard, CPU and RAM. I'd like to keep that part below $2000. The other components are fairly basic and many will be from the current system. I don't want to buy items too soon if susbstantially new technology is around the corner. OTOH, I don't want to wait...

    When to Build New System

The Intel chipset roadmap stuff eludes me. When would you build a new system this year? The old one is rapidly becoming obsolete. I want something that will be usable for two years, and I'll have to bite the bullet and deal with Windows 7.

I should have mentioned that they are notebooks. I don't know about the mini desktop systems that sedentary workers have. I agree that 60GB should be enough for most users.

SSDs - State of the Product?

30GB is not much if the OS is Vista or 7. At one place I worked Corporate specified 120-128 GB drives for standard 2010 and 2011 machines.
