I don't get it either. The AA batteries are cheap enough and last for years. Who wants less capacity? Maybe it would work for a D or C cell with a smaller cell inside.

Obviously the previous installation was full of crap (I saw something about Norton eventually). I was able to re-image it and the computer is fairly normal, though I will have to replace some apps that cannot be used in multiple systems.

They were new ~$2K models in the 12" <3 lb. class exactly 2 years ago. 2-4GB RAM was typical with Vista and the XP was a free downgrade option on DVD. The later versions had the 1.4GHz CPU.

The A-S Z1 has a larger and better ball than the M-10. I'm surprised it is cheaper, since the M-20 is closer to the same size. I have the older B-1, which had a better base than the Z1. I had a Z1 DP for a few days and was disappointed in the panning base smoothness with off-center loads. A...

It is still struggling, but getting there. I'm really wondering about the HD. It sounds raspy and the HDTach read rate is only 39 MB/sec. Seek time is 19.5 sec. Bluetooth is not recognized. I guess each one is uniquely different. WI-FI is picking up the Mormon 6 channel, so that is...

    HDD SMART temps reliable?

A sampling of my drives are between 26-41 °C. Many of them report no temperature, no doubt due to the drive controllers used. The SSDs don't report tremperatures either.

I have no experience with the cheap plates. A cheap lens plate would probably be acceptable with a screw-tightened clamp. However, lever clamps require precision, so I would be more leery. I would not risk the fit or function of a cheap L bracket on a camera. How many lenses and bodies do...

SSDs - State of the Product?

A good rule of thumb is to examine any activity that takes longer than you are comfortable waiting to complete. If the CPU utilization is less than 100% (or 100% of the usable cores in the application) during that time, the HD is probably a limiting factor. Most users don't really need SSDs in...

I thought about the Wimberley, but that is a bit much for his needs as you mentioned. Using a gimbal head for short lenses typically requires compromises such as using a perpendicular rail on the L bracket. It helps to have a leveling base. Ultimately the whole rig is rather bulky and costly.

Look at the Kirk BH-3, Markins M-10, or maybe some of the Photo Clam (33-40 range) mid-sized heads. There are some other cheapie heads of dubious reliability that I would be very cautious about. You definitely want to go with a head that has an A-S clamp for future compatibility...

Is there any problem with switching hard drives or images between notebook PCs? The two units are the exact same model with pre-installed OS, so I'm hoping that there should not be any activision issues. To complicate matter further, there is yet another recent form factor, the 7 mm height 2.5" drive. Apparently some SSDs (e.g., X25 series) are compatible as well as the Seagate single-platter drives. The form factor is useful for SSDs since the circuit boards do not need much height. It is...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Does SAS really achieve 384 MB/sec. transfers from a 3Gbps port, or is that some vendor BS? SATA only reaches 270-280 sustained at the same connection speed and I thought that SAS had even more overhead.
