    Replacing Motherboard

The XP64 is OEM. There is no there version I could find. Cost of the OS is not the issue. The installed apps are the issue.

    UPS Help

I have two of the XS LCD 1300 units. How is the RS different from the XS LCD? The features you mentioned are similar. I thought the RS was just an update of the XS.

There are a few ULV i7 CPUs in the 12"/3 lb. class notebooks, but they are expensive and native speed is not fast. Effectiveness of Turboboots is dependent on hardware and usage.

    Replacing Motherboard

Is it possible to replace the motherborad without buying new operating systems? Meanwhile we are stuck here with only the old 4.2GHz system that has almost no hard drives and a minimal installation.

Reliable FW 800 Card, PCI or PCIe

I had too many SILENT DATA CORRUPTION issues with FW 800 as well as the occasional delayed write failures. I don't think it is critical to your situation anyway, because something else is a bottleneck. FW400 is good for 40 MB/sec. sustained. Did you try another FW cable?

What a bunch of idiots! So one must still work tethered while the battery pack recharges or carry around one of the oversized, inefficient, external 3rd-part packs. Then after the battery loses capacity after a couple of years it requires service to replace.

i7 laptops? Anyone tried? Experience? suggestions?

With only 4GB of RAM, a 64-bit OS will do very little if anything better than a 32-bit one and I doubt that you need 8GB in a notebook. However, it doesn't hurt much if your apps work properly.
