Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

The moral of the story is to use a good LCD panel and use DVI. Then none of this analog video quality matters.

Yet another reason to like Autralia

Teaching common sense and consideration for others would do great things in both categories, but unfortunately you can't teach common sense and we're stuck with stupid people in the world.

    Seagate Warranty Information

It sounds more like it's set up so they can screw you into buying the extended warranty from BB and CompUSA. I read that some of the Midrange PCs sold at those stores would have a 3 year warranty at other places (mail order) but are sold with only a 1 year at the stores request, so they can...

Data Recovery from "dead" Laptop HD (IBM DJSA-220)

Well... for what it's worth it cost us $775 to get the data back. Apparently the 20gig laptop drive is so "popular" with them it has its own special.

Data Recovery from "dead" Laptop HD (IBM DJSA-220)

Anyone have any tips/suggestions on which Data Recovery place to use. It needs to be a fairly quick turn around. Free Estimate would also be good. Finally, not charging an arm and a leg would be ideal. This is from my co-workers Dell notebook, it just goes click, click, click when power is...

What aspects ratios are true, w/o distortion?

That all depends on your monitor, resolution, and DVD software. 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x960, 1600x1200 are all 4:3 ratios. However, with a proper setup you should be able to view DVDs correctly with any resolution. Ideally you want configure your video card so the...

What aspects ratios are true, w/o distortion?

Not exactly true. It assumes non square pixels that are .9x wide, so it's really 648 if you have square pixels.

    Lights out, whos home?

We got power back at 2:15pm today. 22 hours after. Unfortunately we still don't have any water. Good thing it rained and we caught about 150+ gallons of water to manually flush the toilets with. We have a bit of drinking water in pots and pans too.

Intel Pro/1000 MT - Server vs Desktop?

Sounds like you need either better Ethernet cables, or to find the source of the slowdowns on your cable. Fluorescent lights and ethernet cables don't get along too well. I'm sure there are other things too.

Intel Pro/1000 MT - Server vs Desktop?

Well I would guess that if it had it they would sell that as a feature. The omission of that as a selling feature leads me to believe it doesn't have it.

Intel Pro/1000 MT - Server vs Desktop?

It's the desktop version. The Intel card didn't look so rosy 6 months earlier. It got beat 6 ways from Sunday. It seems to be all in the drivers so far.

Yes, but they also don't pass Jumbo frames. Jumbo frames are the key to low CPU usage and higher datarates.

You can get the desktop cards almost as cheap at googlegear. $42.50 with free 2 day air shipping. I would be buying them if the 8 port gigabit SMC switch I wanted was in stock anywhere.

Case for 10HDs (with 18" of a PCI slot)

I think the case is pretty deep. It definitely goes inside the case, not on the outside. As long as the mobo isn't that deep, I think the drives would clear any necessary components on the mobo. Usually, the IDE and floppy headers are down in that corner.

Case for 10HDs (with 18" of a PCI slot)

Yes, this would be the Chenming 601/Antec/Chieftec. There are 5 3.5" bays at the bottom, two external 3.5" bays and 4 external 5.25" bays. It would work with my 8HDs, floppy, and 2 optical drives. However, every bay would be filled, and I'm a little nervous of the ventilation situation. I...

    Voodoo 5500: worth replacing?

I would say yes, but that's just me. New cards have hardware accelerated alpha blending (used for the fade effect in 2k and XP) and really are faster in a 2d desktop enviroment than the cards you both mention. In addition most new cards can drive two monitors, have TV out and DVI support as well.

Case for 10HDs (with 18" of a PCI slot)

After looking closely at the picture I think a 18" cable should be ok. It looks like there's enough slop in that cable. I guess I can always get 24" cables for the top two drives if the 18s don't reach. I have a 6 drive array, and a 2 drive array, so it should work out nicely even if I have...

Case for 10HDs (with 18" of a PCI slot)

So, now that I have all the drives for my server I figure I should probably take the drives off the floor where they're currently running. Are there any moderately sized server cases or tower cases that are going to let me put at least 8 HDs within 18" of a PCI slot? Ventilation is pretty...

I found them at E-cost for $109 and $148 shipped. They looks like a better deal. Here's the link for the 5 port model on SMC's page. I can't find the 8 port on their site. http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Products&pg=Product-Details&prod=310&site=c Let me know what you think. Thanks.

    1TB RAID 5 array

Thanks for the information guys. I've since found that SMC has just put out (this month) 5 and 8 port Gigabit switches that have jumbo frame support. Models SMC8505T and SMC8508T. Pricing is supposed to be $135 and $195 respectively.

Well, the hardware is all ordered. I have 5 of the 6 HDs in my posession. The last is on it's way from NewEgg and the 3ware 7506-8 is on it's way from Hypermicro. Hopefully I'll get all the stuff by friday so I can set it up over the weekend.

    1TB RAID 5 array

According to the last reviews at StorageReview of a 3ware card, and the benchmarks on 3ware's site the card should be good for over 40Mbytes/sec write and beyond what the 32bit 33MHz PCI bus can handle for reads RAID-5. See http://www.3ware.com/products/benchmarks.asp

    1TB RAID 5 array

I already have the rest of the hardware. Copper gigabit is only good for about 25-30Mbytes/sec anyhow unless you have a really expensive NIC with a co-processor on it to offload the load. So drawing 25-30 meg a sec from the RAID array to the ethernet card shouldn't really overload it. At...

    1TB RAID 5 array

I'm in the process of building a RAID 5 setup with 6 WD2000JB drives. So far I have 4 of the drives. I've got my eye on a 3ware 7500-8 card, but 3ware just announced a 7506-8, which is supposed to have up to a 25% performance increase. Now I'm going to be stuffing this thing in a Soyo Dragon...
