    Dummy Sound card driver?

Has anyone seen a sound card driver that will make Windows 2000 think it has a sound card, when in reality it does not? I put a HDTV tuner card in my PC to record HD to the RAID-5 array in it, but the system doesn't have a sound card, and that doesn't make the software very happy.

*cheap* but decent PCI SATA controller

What's a cheap but decent SATA controller? I'm looking to add a large drive to my HTPC for recording HD to, and it seems some of the very large drives are either SATA only, or the SATA version of the drive is cheaper than the PATA version. The machine doesn't have a built in SATA controller...

    Confessions of an Engineering Washout

I don't know... Maybe it's just me, but the article seemed like a bunch of sour grapes. I firmly believe you can't teach someone to be a good engineer. They either have the right mindset for it, or they don't. All the "impossible" classes are designed to weed and screen out the people who...

    DVD Burning Question

I've been burning -R/+R Fuji's (Taiyo Yuden), +R Verbatim Printables (Mitsubishi Chemical), and some TDK +R Printables (CMC) and haven't had problems with any of them. I'm a little bit anal so I always do a full verify on my burns. I've had 0 frisbees and 0 failed verifies from the above...

Ritek made +R DL discs suck. They appear to burn just fine, but they often fail a verify. I've had about 33% of my Memorex DL discs fail the verify (of about 15 or so discs).

If you only want the movie without the menu, I've found DVD2One is the best program (if used in Variable Compression mode) for transparency after compression. It's 2005, why do things still not do WPA?

So, I take it you can't crack a WEP network in 10 seconds?
  19. S

It's 2005, why do things still not do WPA?

10 seconds? All the information I've seen indicates you had to collect packets for days and it still takes the PC hours to get the key from that data. I'd love to know how to break WEP in 10 seconds. Then I wouldn't need to pay for internet access anymore.

NEWZ: Seagate Releases 120GB & 100GB 2½ Inch Notebook Dr

What brand blanks have you tried? I'm thinking to buy a NEC-3540A and some dual layer blanks so I can backup some DVD's. GM Employee Discount for Everyone until July 5th

Hahaha... No, it doesn't end up being anything like that. No it's more like ~10% off sticker, but no one pays sticker for a GM car. In a major metrolpolitan market like the Detroit Metro Area, most people can walk out of the dealer with a deal that's nearly as low as the employee price...

    Open RAW format advocacy.

Except the camera would take 15+ seconds to write the TIFF to the CF card due to it's size. RAW files are great! You can adjust the exposure and all sorts of setting after the fact to get the best possible picture possible. You can't do that with a TIFF file.

3ware card shows drives, but no array

Ok, well the story gets longer... The two drives that were acting up both check out to be 100% A-ok according to WD's tools. I did a 100% surface read and they both pass. I re-ran the 3ware script and let it fault out the "bad" drive and now it works in a degraded state (no fault tolerance)...

3ware card shows drives, but no array

Well... I got the files back from them to restore the array and that worked ok, but I've hit a snag. The array faulted out one of the drives that should be ok, and not the drive that's acting up. So, I'm in the process of running WD's disc diagnostic tools on both of the drives. So far they...

3ware card shows drives, but no array

Well, I've been in contact with 3ware / AMCC and they have some sort of script / utility that can restore the array. Apparently the array information is stored on the drives in some control blocks, not on the card and one way or another it got cleared out. They sent me a utility that reads a...
