    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

If we would stop capping wells and start drilling wells we could easily surpass the oil production peak in the 1970s. But we can't because we might damage the environment. It's not OK for the US to drill for oil off the coast of Florida, but the Chinese can drill for oil in Cuba's...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

We're not going to run out of oil in our lifetimes. I figure they will find another energy source before the world runs out of oil. I don't. That's crazy talk. All the CO2 in the oil used to be in the atmosphere before. The plants absorbed it and are now the very source of the oil we're...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Odd how the more expensive oil gets, the more of it we find. Yes it's absolutely a question. You've bought into all these crazy ideas hook line and sinker. I'm all for a clean, renewable, cheap energy source, but lets face it. One doesn't exist yet. The closest one we have is oil! American...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

The costs of refining are basically constant. The price of oil isn't. What makes you think that the high price of gasoline is tied to refining capacity? I think we do need more refineries in the US, but the high price of gasoline is due primarily to the high cost of oil. The cost of oil...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Uh... that won't work. First of all they're global companies and the US would have no basis to nationalize them. They would just pull out of the US / shut down their US operations, which is more or less exactly what they will do if the gov't tries to nail them with a "windfall profits"...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

So you want to reduce domestic oil production further, become more dependent on foreign oil, and pay even more at the pump?

    Build Recommendation for Father-in-Law

The key is that while an app or task might be pegging a single core momentarily the other core is free to keep doing what you're doing, so you don't get the momentary pauses or freezes that a single core machine delivers. I loved that about my P4 with Hypertheading. Obviously the dual and quad...

    Build Recommendation for Father-in-Law

I don't know about that... After having used a machine with hyperthreading way back in the day (when it first came out) I've never happily gone back to a single core machine, even for very casual use. Hypertheaded machines and later the dual core machines are just much more snappy even for the...

Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

Funny how when the CAFE standards were introduced they were going to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. I wonder why that hasn't worked? I mean after all we started conserving and clearly conservation is the key.

Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

Are you going to argue with my about the definition of the word "is" next? You clearly have a problem with cheap and plentiful food, but you want to claim that you never said that it should be expensive or scarce. You're right, you didn't say it, but you clearly intimated that the statement...

Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

Yes, poor people should not be able to buy food. People in the 3rd world should have to starve to death because food is far too cheap and plentiful. We have had cheap, plentiful food for far too long. We should have expensive and scarce food. Is that really the position you want to take...
  23. S

Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

Uh... what you're saying is true. As prices rise it becomes more economical to get hard to get oil, but the original point was that prices won't drop due to conservation only by an increase in supply.
  24. S

Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

It's odd how the people who complain the loudest about the US being dependent on foreign oil are the same people who prevent the US from developing it's own oil sources and and other energy sources. Somehow the Sierra club and all the greenies on the left have got the country by the balls. We...

    Should we ban disposable batteries?

NiMH cells, eneloops specifically are very good batteries capable of pushing a lot of current (>5A) with very little voltage sag (due mainly to low internal resistance). I don't see how Lithium batteries would be any better than the eneloops. There are NiMH batteries with even less voltage sag...

Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

The solution is more food, not conservation of people or calories.
  36. S

Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

Your argument is flawed. It assumes an unlimited supply of food. That isn't the case or food would be free and of no value like air. The solution to high energy prices is more energy. Simple supply and demand. You can't conserve your way into lower energy prices to matter what the democrats...

Algae could help to meet Kyoto standard.

I realize I'm replying to a post that's over 2 years old, but you are way off base. The oil companies would like nothing more than a cheap clean source of reusable energy they can sell to the public. Oil's a pain in the butt to deal with. You've got to find it, drill for it, transport it...

    Should we ban disposable batteries?

They're one of the better cells out there. Low self discharge plus low internal resistance and ability to hold their voltage under a high current load. They're pretty unique batteries.

"Cheap" system with 64 bit / 66Mhz PCI slots?

"Cheap" system with 64 bit / 66Mhz PCI slots?

The yearly bill would never work because no one would save enough. I like the monthly bill idea better. Give people their whole pay check and send them a monthly bill just like their credit card, utilities, or anything else. That'll start another revolution just as fast.

Dieing 21" Hitachi 802 plus What to replace it with?

I'm not sure what you're talking about. You can buy HDCP enabled video cards. I have two of them at home in two different machines. They're basically only needed if you want blu-ray or HD-DVD playback over a digital connection.
